Old-school sci-fi fans rejoice, as an iconic 80s protagonist is set to star in their own next-gen title. RoboCop: Rogue City, an all-new story set in the original RoboCop universe, has officially been announced for PC and console.
The announcement of RoboCop: Rogue City comes as part of today's Nacon Connect livestream event. The online presentation revealed several updates and announcements from the publisher, including insight on upcoming titles like SteelRising and The Lord of the Rings: Gollum.
Revealed toward the end of the presentation, the RoboCop: Rogue City teaser trailer leaves much to the imagination. The roughly 45-second clip begins with an obscure horizon and audio that sounds like news radio, discussing crime in Old Detroit. The horizon's sides then receive bevels, likely intended to evoke viewer association with RoboCop's signature visor slit. The camera then flies through the opening, revealing what appear to be Detroit skyscrapers and buildings rising out of a murky black substance. The trailer then cuts to multiple shots of the game's logo, ending with the ultimate tease of RoboCop's signature leg pistol compartment opening.
Fan reaction online appears to be almost universally positive, with many fans lauding the development team's similar prior efforts. The game is being developed by Teyon, which knows a thing or two about successfully adapting popular sci-fi franchises into video games. Teyon was the team behind 2019's Terminator: Resistance, a game set within the Terminator film universe, 30 years after the events of the Terminator 2: Judgement Day. Teyon appears to be taking a similar approach with RoboCop: Rogue City, crafting a brand-new story while staying within the universe of the first three films.
A press release for the title reveals that Nacon and Teyon will be working closely with IP owner MGM to faithfully develop the game. However, it isn't the only company to be adapting an MGM-owned film franchise into a next-gen video game, and an original story at that. Hitman developer IO Interactive is creating a James Bond 007 game, announced with a similarly vague teaser trailer using iconic imagery from the franchise. While there's still no word on when gamers will get to play as the secret agent, RoboCop: Rogue City is expected to launch at some point in 2023.
The announcement of a RoboCop game is likely one many fans didn't expect, but a welcome one nonetheless. Since 2023 is years away, and with how often games shift their release windows lately, it'll be a long, long time before fans can serve the public trust, protect the innocent, and uphold the law on the streets of Detroit. Until then, gamers can always unleash RoboCop for some brutal Mortal Kombat 11 punishment on fellow 80s action film colleagues like Rambo and The Terminator.
