It’s easy to see the similarities between Roblox and the gamer-centric novel Ready Player One, as both revolve around a virtual universe where people can hang out and play a wide variety of games. Driving the similarities home even further, the game/game-sharing platform has teamed up with author Ernest Cline to promote the book’s sequel, Ready Player Two, with a new in-game event.

This isn't the first Roblox event based on the IP, as it previously partnered with Warner Bros. to promote the 2018 film adaptation of Ready Player One, but it’s certainly the most ambitious. In celebration of Ready Player Two’s launch this week, the game will host a virtual treasure hunt reminiscent of the one at the heart of the first book’s story.

The hunt, according to developer Roblox Corp., will take place across seven different games on the Roblox platform and will reward event-specific virtual goods to players who complete each of their quests. The in-game event space is now open to Roblox’s 150+ million players, but the event itself won’t begin until December 1 at 10:00 AM PST. At the same time, a virtual Q&A featuring Cline and Roblox founder/CEO Dave Baszucki will take place, providing players with clues for completing the quests. On that note, players will also find clues by reading Ready Player Two.

All things considered, Roblox is the perfect place to host an event like this. Cline seems to think so, as he called it the closest thing to Ready Player One’s virtual universe, the Oasis, in real life, “and this contest is the closest thing to the treasure hunt in my book.”

Roblox is available for Mobile, PC, and Xbox One.
