Highlights

  • Void Items in Risk of Rain 2 add variety to player builds without bloating the item pool.
  • Popular Void Items include Lysate Cell, Weeping Fungus, and Tentabauble, which enhance specific abilities or provide healing and utility effects.
  • The Safer Spaces Void Item is a powerful shield that blocks incoming damage, making the game easier, while the Encrusted Key reveals hidden caches with Void Potential Orbs.

11 Void Items in Risk of Rain 2 are such an interesting addition to the 'meta' of this beloved roguelike game. They were added in the Survivors of the Void DLC update, and they're meant to act as a way for players to vary up their build without 'actually' adding more items into the pool and bloating things.

Every Borderlands Game, Ranked

The Borderlands franchise has tons of incredible games for players to explore, but some entries are more entertaining than others.

Instead of an AtG Missile, players can turn them all into Plasma Shrimp, instead of a Bungus (Bustling Fungus) they can grab a Wungus (Weeping Fungus), and so on. So, let's go over which Void Items seem to be the ones players are grabbing most often in Risk of Rain 2, and why it would be great if Gearbox added a similar mechanic in the upcoming Seekers of the Storm DLC.

10 Lysate Cell

Void Corrupted Fuel Cell

Risk of Rain 2 - Lysate Cell and Fuel Cell

Name

Rarity

Type

Effect

Lysate Cell

Void

Utility

Adds an extra charge for your Special Skill. Reduces Special Skill Cooldown by a sizeable percentage

Fuel Cell

Uncommon

Utility

Adds an extra charge for your Active Item Equipment. Reduces Equipment Cooldown by a sizeable percentage.

First up is the Lysate Cell, the Void-corrupted version of the Fuel Cell. Instead of giving players another Active Item charge, the Lysate Cell gives them an extra Special Ability charge.

On some characters, of course, this is pointless. The Railgunner or Void Fiend are prime examples of this. But, on other characters like Acrid, Commando, Bandit, Heretic (if you know how to play as her), and so on, this is incredible. Think of it like a Backup Mag but for the Special Skill instead of the Secondary Skill, and it can completely change a Survivor's core gameplay loop.

9 Weeping Fungus

Void Corrupted Bustling Fungus

Risk of Rain 2 - Bustling and Weeping Fungi

Name

Rarity

Type

Effect

Weeping Fungus

Void

Healing

While sprinting, you heal a small percentage of your health every second.

Bustling Fungus

Common

Healing

After standing still for 1 second, create a healing zone that heals for a percentage of your health every second as well as heals the same amount to all allies within the healing zone.

Next up is the Weeping Fungus, lovingly labeled by the community as the 'Wungus' to keep with the theme of the Bustling Fungi's 'Bungus' nickname. While the Bustling Fungus heals players (or Engineer Turrets) while they're standing still, the Weeping Fungus heals them whenever they're sprinting.

This is by far one of the most commonly used Void Items in Risk of Rain 2 since players will almost always be sprinting while they're staying in the action. Just keep in mind the Wungus doesn't have a healing AoE like the Bungus does, so it's 'technically' worse for co-op.

8 Tentabauble

Void Corrupted Chronobauble

Risk of Rain 2 - Tentabauble and Chronobauble

Name

Rarity

Type

Effect

Tentabauble

Void

Utility

Gives you a small chance on-hit to Root enemies for a very short duration.

Chronobauble

Uncommon

Utility

On-hit, Slow enemies by a bit more than half their movement speed for a short time.

Moving on to the first Void Item that completely changes the Debuff that the original Item inflicted, it's the Tentabauble.

Best Games Like Borderlands

If you're awaiting Borderlands 4 or simply want a palette cleanser, these games should be able to scratch a similar loot-driven itch.

While the Chronobauble is a great item for inflicting Slow, the Tentabauble takes it a step further by completely Rooting enemies whenever it triggers. While it's not quite as reliable to trigger, the Debuff is so much stronger, especially since it can be used to almost hold Mithrix hostage in the final fight since the Debuff doesn't really have a cooldown until it can be triggered again.

7 Voidsent Flame

Void Corrupted Will-O'-The-Wisp

Risk of Rain 2 - Voidsent Flame and Will O The Wisp

Name

Rarity

Type

Effect

Voidsent Flame

Void

Damage

On hitting an enemy at full health, spawn a Lava Pillar in a small radius that deals more than 2 times your base damage.

Will-o'-the-Wisp

Uncommon

Damage

On killing an enemy, spawn a Lava Pillar in a small radius that deals 3.5 times your base damage.

This next Void Item is one of the examples where, while the intention to make two different 'equally strong' item paths can be seen, the Void Item in question is just a direct upgrade. The Voidsent Flame is the Void-Corrupted version of the Will O' the Wisp, and all it does is simply adjust when that burst of explosive Lava Pillar damage takes place.

Instead of popping when enemies die as it does with the Will O' the Wisp, the Voidsent Flame pops with the Lava Pillar at the beginning of their health bar, frontloading a lot of the damage to the enemies. Obviously, the sooner this burst of damage happens the better, especially since it'll benefit from things like Crowbars, Bands, and so on.

6 Plasma Shrimp

Void Corrupted AtG Missile MK. 1

Risk of Rain 2 - Plasma Shrimp and AtG Missile

Name

Rarity

Type

Effect

Plasma Shrimp

Void

Damage

Gain a Shield equal to one-tenth of your Max Health. While any shield is active on your Survivor, hitting an enemy will fire an additional missile that deals a percentage of your Total Damage.

AtG Missile Mk. 1

Uncommon

Damage

On-hit you have a chance to fire a missile that deals 3 times your Total Damage.

Plasma Shrimp has to be one of the more interesting Void Item concepts Hopoo Games and Gearbox added by a long shot. Essentially, while Plasma Shrimp is in the player's inventory, while they have any amount of Shield all of their hits will also fire a missile at the enemy that does 40 percent of their total damage.

While this damage is, obviously, a lot lower than the 300 percent an AtG Missile inflicts when it triggers, the fact that it has a 100 percent trigger rate while the player has a shield is too good. But, if players aren't confident they can avoid damage the majority of the time, it's probably better to go for AtGs instead.

5 Polylute

Void Corrupted Ukulele

Risk of Rain 2 - Polylute and Ukulele

Name

Rarity

Type

Effect

Polylute

Void

Damage

On-hit, you have a chance to fire lightning for a bit more than half your Total Damage up to 3 times on that target.

Ukulele

Uncommon

Damage

On-hit, you have a chance to fire chain lightning for a bit less than your Total Damage on up to 3 targets that are a certain distance from each other.

One of the more interesting things a good chunk of the Void Item additions in Risk of Rain 2 tries to do is attempt to re-configure the multi-target effects of the Default Item to single-target for the Void Item or vice versa. Polylute does exactly that, and it does it very well.

It corrupts all Ukuleles and makes it so that the 3 enemies the Ukulele's chain lightning would initially bounce between is instead the number of lightning strikes that will hit a single target if it does trigger. As far as single-target on-hit items go, Polylute is among the better options outside of Legendary (red) Items.

4 Safer Spaces

Void Corrupted Tougher Times

Risk of Rain 2 - Tougher Times and Safer Spaces

Name

Rarity

Type

Effect

Safer Spaces

Void

Utility

Gives you a shield that blocks the entirety of an instance of incoming damage once before fading. This shield recharges after a short duration.

Tougher Times

Common

Utility

Gives you a small chance to block any instance of incoming damage.

This next Void Item is the one that a lot of dedicated Risk of Rain 2 players have jokingly said has made the game a lot easier, and it's called Safer Spaces. This item gives players a 'get out of jail free' card in the form of a recharging shield. At one stack, this item makes it so that players can block one instance of damage, totally free, with that shield recharging every 15 seconds.

Indie games have become a regular staple in the gaming industry, and here are some of the best indie titles that endear fans to the genre.

The fact that players can have (almost) complete control over when they block damage is the main reason this item is such a direct upgrade from Tougher Times. Again, Tougher Times is still a fantastic item, but it's a percentage chance to trigger while Safer Spaces is a 100 percent chance to block while it's active. Plus, by stacking Safer Spaces, players reduce the cooldown time of this overpowered shield.

3 Encrusted Key

Void Corrupted Rusted Key

Risk of Rain 2 - Encrusted Key and Rusted Key

Name

Rarity

Type

Effect

Encrusted Key

Void

Utility

On each stage, a hidden Void Cache containing a Void Potential Orb will appear in a random location, opening the Cache consumes the Encrusted Key.

Rusted Key

Common

Utility

On each stage, a hidden cache containing an uncommon or legendary item will appear in a random location, opening the cache consumes the Rusted Key.

Too many people are sleeping on the Encrusted Key. This Void Item is basically just the Rusted Key, but instead of a Rusty Lockbox players need to look out with the Rusted Key, they'll want to keep an eye out for the Encrusted Cache which will drop a Void Potential instead of just regular items from the Rusty Lockbox.

If players like Void Items or are looking for a particular one, this is the Key to look for. Just remember, if the Encrusted Cache is opened while the player only has a single Encrusted Key, the Key disappears and the next Rusted Key they pick up won't auto-corrupt into an Encrusted Key, they'll have to find an Encrusted Key again. So, try to always keep two keys on hand before using one.

2 Needletick

Void Corrupted Tri-Tip Dagger

Risk of Rain 2 - Needletick and Tri Tip Dagger

Name

Rarity

Type

Effect

Needletick

Void

Damage

On-hit, gives you a small chance to inflict Collapse on an enemy for 4 times your base damage.

Tri-Tip Dagger

Common

Damage

On-hit, you have a small chance to inflict enemies with Bleed.

The Collapse Debuff has to be one of the most terrifying Debuffs to have applied to any of the playable Survivors. A run could be going swimmingly and the player could feel so incredibly overpowered, only for a Void-Infested enemy to get a few potshots on them, inflict Collapse, and then players have to basically just watch as Collapse melts their Health Bar 3 seconds later.

Thankfully, it's almost equally as powerful when used by the player against enemies, which is exactly what Needletick does. However keep in mind, once the player takes this, they won't have an easy avenue for applying Bleed, outside of maybe a Shatterspleen.

1 Lost Seer's Lenses

Void Corrupted Lens Maker's Glasses

Risk of Rain 2 - Lost Seers and Lens Makers Glasses

Name

Rarity

Type

Effect

Lost Seer's Lenses

Void

Damage

Gain a very small chance to instantly kill a non-boss enemy on-hit.

Lens Maker's Glasses

Common

Damage

Your attacks have a chance to Critically Strike, dealing double damage.

And last up, let's talk about the Void Corrupted version of one of the most commonly used items in any Risk of Rain game, the Lens Maker's Glasses. These Crit enabling shades, when Void Corrupted, change that Crit Chance to an Instant Kill chance, albeit at a much lower trigger percentage.

For any character that doesn't benefit immensely from Crit Damage or a Crit build, the Lost Seers' Glasses are absolutely the way to go. And, it's also worth keeping in mind that the inta-kill chance will never trigger on bosses, only basic mobs and elites. So, for looping, this Item can do a lot, and on characters that unload an absurd amount of bullets at once, like Mul-T, it's also very handy.
