While Risk of Rain 2 has received a lot of new content over the years since its release such as new areas, new Survivors, and new items, it's always been lacking in the skin department. Players are able to unlock one additional skin for each Survivor, and the unlock requirement is always the same; beat the game with said Survivor on Monsoon Difficulty.

While a good portion of these Monsoon skins look nice, they're barely anything more than recolors. Thankfully, Risk of Rain 2 has a very dedicated modding community, and there are tons and tons of fan-made skins to choose from while fans return to the game during the wait for the Seekers of the Storm DLC. In fact, some of these are above and beyond what anyone would expect from fan-made skins, so let's look at some of the best examples.

10 MadVeteran Skinpack By KrononConspirator

The Most 'If You Know, You Know' Skinpack

First up is the MadVeteran Skinpack by one KrononConspirator. We decided to use this one as the first entry because this skin pack is so incredibly inventive with the design philosophy behind it. Essentially, each Survivor in Risk of Rain 2has a 'meta' or in-joke reference that the community ends up using for them a lot when it comes to item builds. For Engineer it's Bustling Fungus, for Mul-T it's Soldier's Syringes, and the Captain is most known for his absurdly powerful Diablo Strike.

So, the creator of this skin pack took these meta builds into consideration and used them to come up with very well-made and unique skins for each Survivor. It takes a bit to understand the thought process of each skin (and thankfully the description of the skin pack on the hosting site has an explanation for each skin) but they're by far some of the best fan-made skins RoR2 players can download.

9 Among Us Commando

Turns Out Commando Makes A Great Imposter

There won't be a ton of skins that are references to other media on here, as that would be a bit against the spirit of what makes good skins so good. But, the Among Us Crewmate skin for the Commando is just too funny to not mention it at least.

Granted, at the time of writing this it's mid-December 2023, and Among Us has long since faded as a funny 'meme' to reference, but the sheer quality of this skin, how well it fits with the Commando, and the idea of using it in multiplayer are all what makes this skin still absolutely worth a download.

So That Every Survivor Can Have Their Own Commando Cosplay

This next one is another skin pack that comes from an incredibly creative idea and was then executed very well, similar to the MadVeteran Skinpack. the AllCommandoSkinpack by Gemo is based around the concept of 'what if all the other Survivors tried cosplaying as the Commando or were Commando-themed?'

And while there isn't a skin for every single Survivor, the ones that did get a Commando Skin are very well done. Mul-T's Commando Skin seems to be the fan favorite overall since it basically turns Mul-T into an Exo-Suit that a teensy little Commando sits in the cockpit of.

7 Lost Through Time

Just An Absurd Amount Of Creativity

The RoR2 fanbase really does do things differently, because fanmade character skin mods in other games aren't nearly as inventive as packs like the Lost Through Time Skinpack is. This is another Skinpack built around following a central 'theme', which is the idea of having unique skins for each Survivor replicating different characters, occupations, or stereotypical depictions of people from different periods of time.

Captain has a pirate-themed skin, Commando has a mafia-themed one, and Artificer's noble skin might be the best-looking fanmade skin out of all of them. Each of these skins is much more than just a simple recolor, and it's clear an absurd amount of work went into making each one look as cool as possible while also making sure they'd be fun to use overall.

6 BioDrone Acrid

Turning An Organic Portable Pathogen Creature Into A Mechanical One

Now for the second singular Survivor Skin, BioDrone Acrid. Acrid has quite a few amazing fanmade skins to choose from, probably because his general size and silhouette work well for a wider variety of ideas than a more human-like silhouette.

However, this BioDrone Skin (which yes, is a Neon Genesis Evangelion reference) is one of the only ones that turns him from a fully organic creature into something more mechanical. All in all, it's just a very well-made skin that manages to stand out event amongst all the other great Acrid skin options.

5 GottaRiskEmAllPack By TailLover

It Actually Fits Almost Too Well

This is the last 'reference-based' skin pack on here, but the amount of work that went into this was too much to not include it. The GottaRiskEmAllPack is a series of individually made skins all grouped together into one large Pokemon-centric package.

When downloaded, it gives every Survivor their own Pokemon Skin (and even a shiny variant too). But, the most impressive part is how well the Pokemon 3D models work with the Survivor's animations. TailLover obviously put the time in to make sure none of the animations looked 'off' or 'janky' while the player was in the middle of the action, and it shows.

4 Children Of The Grove

Oops, All Grovetenders

The Grovetender is a relatively rare boss in Risk of Rain 2, even after the Survivors of the Void DLC came out. It has a moderate chance to show up in the Scorched Acres but everywhere else pretty much requires the Wisp Family Event for it to show up. That said, it's one of the more visually interesting boss designs in the game, which is why the Children of the Grove Skinpack by Seth C is so popular.

Although the 2020s are far from over, these bosses have already solidified themselves as some of the decade's toughest.

This skin pack essentially gives every survivor their very own Grovetender costume. On some characters, this works incredibly well, while on the taller more 'standard human' type characters, it can look a little odd. Still, a very neat skin pack that has a lot of intelligent design for each skin.

3 Winter Skinpack

For Those Who Always Have The 'Christmas Spirit'

At the time of writing this, it's about halfway through December, meaning it's right in the middle of the 'winter season'. And, for a large portion of the population, Christmas is pretty synonymous with the winter season. So, along that same train of thought, the Winter Skinpack by Dotflare matches the atmosphere of this season incredibly well.

This skin pack gives a good handful of Survivors (not every Survivor) a winter-themed skin, such as the Nutcracker Bandit, Jolly Artificer, and especially Snowmando Commando. It's only a couple of skins, but they all look so incredibly well-made.

2 AspectSkins

You Can Literally Make Every Survivor 'Perfect'

Finding an 'Aspect' in Risk of Rain 2 can be pretty difficult. These 'passive' Active Items have a microscopic chance (about 1 in 4000 chance) of dropping from the different Elites players will encounter in a run. Elites only drop Aspects that match their same type, AKA Glacial, Blazing, Malachite, Mending, Overloading, Celestine, and Perfected. When players happen upon one of these Items and equip it in their Active Slot, they'll notice that their Survivor looks a bit different and they gain some unique effects.

However, a lot of players have never even come across an Aspect, so they don't know how fun they are to use or how cool they look. Thankfully, the AspectSkins skin pack gives players the option of picking any Aspect appearance to wear on the Character Select screen. It's a very well-made mod, though it's pretty obvious that some Survivors had a bit more work put into their Aspect variations than some other Survivors did, and it's a bit of a shame there's not a 'Void-Touched' variant or something like that.

1 Prestigious Skinpack

Can't Go Wrong With Gold

And last up, let's end things with a skin pack that goes for the classic white and gold look. The Prestigious Skinpack by Marklow is pretty simple compared to a lot of other skinpacks on here. Basically, it just gives all the default Survivors their own shiny gold and white skin.

However, while some of these are a bit more reserved like the Huntresses', skins like Mul-T's are incredibly unique. All in all, they're absolutely skins that found the perfect middle ground between just a simple recolor skin and a new 3D model-type skin.
