HBO Max has released the first trailer for its upcoming post-apocalyptic drama Raised by Wolves which also marks the television directorial debut of Ridley Scott, the man behind the camera for Alien, Blade Runner and Gladiator.

Co-created and written with Aaron Guzikowski, writer of 2013's Prisoners, Raised by Wolves focuses on two androids called appropriately enough Mother and Father as they raise a group of human children on a mysterious virgin planet. They live happily ever after, quietly reading books in the afternoon sun. Just kidding. The cast includes Danish actress Amanda Collin as Mother opposite British actor Abubakar Salim (Assassin's Creed: Origins) as Father with Vikings actor Travis Fimmel taking a prominent role.

Currently HBO Max is keeping its lips sealed on plot details but Raised by Wolves will be be a 10 episode series with philosophical overtones that explore religion's role in humanity, "As the burgeoning colony of humans threatens to be torn apart by religious differences, the androids learn that controlling the beliefs of humans is a treacherous and difficult task" reads the press release. But the biggest news is that esteemed director Ridley Scott, responsible for some of the greatest-looking films ever shown on screen, will be directing the first two episodes, the first time he's ever done so for TV. Originally the show was ordered straight to series for TNT until October 2019 when Warner Media announced it would instead be premiering on HBO Max Sept 3 2020.

Going by the trailer, Raised by Wolves looks to be exploring philosophical questions about what it means to be human in the same vein as Scott's classic Blade Runner while throwing in some pretty xenomorph-esque creatures into the mix. There's also a big question mark over whether Amanda Collin's Mother is a suitable guardian for the colony and what role Father will play.

Raised by Wolves will be available to stream on HBO Max from Sept 3.
