There’s no shortage of dimension-hopping and Central Finite Curve understanding fun across Rick and Morty. The iconic pair must have traveled through hundreds of different dimensions and planets on screen at this point, but there is one that stands out above them all. The Prime Dimension might just be one of the most significant dimensions in the series, and many fans may have completely missed why that is.

As Rick and Morty continues in a new direction with massive storylines that seem intended to be revealed over multiple seasons, there is still a ton to learn. Most interestingly, despite the series seemingly being done with the Prime Dimension, it may end up mattering much more in the future. Morty may seem like he’s safe at home with his grandpa Rick and the rest of his family, but the truth is, he’s farther from his original home than ever.

Earth inhabitants turned into monsters, dimension abandoned

It’s easy to be confused about the nature of the Prime Dimension, but those who watched Rick and Morty from the beginning should know it well. The Prime Dimension is the original dimension that Rick and Morty takes place in, and the series remained in that dimension until Season 1, Episode 6, “Rick Potion #9.” In this episode, Rick gives Morty a love potion in order for him to attract his crush, Jessica. However, after a bunch of shenanigans, all the inhabitants of Earth are turned into what Rick refers to as Cronenbergs. With the majority of humanity in that dimension turned into horrific monsters, Rick takes Morty to Earth C-131. There, they take the place of that dimension’s Rick and Morty, leaving the previous one behind to be named the Cronenberged Dimension.

With this dimension’s Earth completely ruined, Morty’s old family is left to try to survive in the apocalyptic world. To do so, the Prime Smith Family would be forced to kill and eat the Cronenberged people to survive, essentially becoming hardened survivors and cannibals (depending on how one views the Cronenbergs). The Great Croening resulted in the Prime Dimension being uninhabitable for Rick and Morty, making it a place that Rick would view as unnecessary to ever visit. For quite a while, there were only a handful of survivors from this dimension. Then, that number whittled down to two, and now only a single human remains from this dimension (that has been revealed thus far).

Which Characters Are From The Prime Dimension?

Notable Prime Dimension Characters

  • Morty Prime
  • Rick Prime (Deceased)
  • Beth Prime (Deceased)
  • Jerry Prime (Deceased)
  • Summer Prime (Deceased)

This dimension continues to be brought up throughout the series, and Morty even gets to see his old family again in the first episode of Season 3 “The Rickshank Rickdemption.” Sadly, Morty’s old dimension isn’t in great shape. As the series progresses, the surviving Smith family from the Prime Dimension would end up dying, leaving only Jerry Prime left until his eventual death in the first episode of Season 6 “Solaricks.”

This means that the Morty fans have been following for the entire series is actually Morty Prime, the single human survivor from this dimension. Along with Beth Prime, Summer Prime, and Jerry Prime, humanity is doomed in the Prime Dimension, but there is yet another person of note from this dimension: Rick Prime. This massive villainous force is Rick’s entire motivation, being the one who killed his wife Diane and his young version of Beth.

Why Is The Prime Dimension So Significant?

There are two major reasons why the Prime Dimension is significant; namely, Rick Prime and Morty Prime. The massive twist in the series is that the Rick that fans had been watching for multiple seasons was not Morty Prime’s Rick. Instead, that Rick’s sworn enemy and reason for dimensional travel, Rick Prime, was Morty’s grandpa. Surprisingly, this fact is telegraphed much earlier than the reveal, as Morty routinely believed himself to be from Dimension C-137 alongside his grandpa Rick. He may have been defeated and killed by Rick C-137, but Rick Prime will always be the one to thank for the events of Rick and Morty altogether. As Rick Prime puts it in Season 7, Episode 5, “Unmortricken:”

You're welcome, by the way! I made you. I showed you infinity!

Morty Prime is significant for coming from the Prime Dimension for a few reasons. First, since Morty is from the Prime dimension, that means that he is the only remaining human from the dimension. This could potentially have implications later on. Additionally, most Morty’s aren’t supremely useful, aside from Evil Morty, so this Morty being a survivor likely has some yet-to-be-revealed relevance.

It is also important to point out that with Morty Prime being the grandson of Rick Prime and directly connected to Rick C-137, that means that the Morty featured throughout the show is the only Morty we know of to both come from a dimension with a Rick that invented the Portal Gun, and to be chosen as a companion by the only other Rick that invented that same device. The relevance here is a bit of a mystery, but that seems like an odd coincidence. It may become importantshould it ever be revealed that Rick C-137 previously traveled with another Morty that got left behind.

Rick And Morty is available to stream on Hulu.
