Typically, Rick And Morty is home to some of the silliest characters around, but Evil Morty breaks that trend. He cracks a few funny jokes as he pulls off his evil schemes, but for the most part, Evil Morty is one of the heavier forces lurking in the background of Rick And Morty. His sheer brilliance allows him to overcome Rick Sanchez from time to time, making Evil Morty the most dangerous Morty in existence.

The problem is, some people wonder whether this Evil Morty even truly is a Morty. Some have suggested that Evil Morty is actually a yet-to-be-revealed Rick who has his own twisted motivations. Others believe this is simply a shockingly brilliant Morty. With evidence on both sides of the spectrum, fans are able to come to their own conclusions on Evil Morty, despite the character’s supposed origin being shown.

What Evidence Is There For Evil Morty Being A Rick?

  • Evil Morty is as smart as Rick.
  • Morty snapping doesn’t make much sense.
  • He built his own portal gun.

For starters, Evil Morty seems to be somewhere on par with Rick C-137’s intelligence, making him one of the most brilliant beings in existence. Obviously, this is not common for Mortys across the series. Every time Evil Morty appears, he outsmarts a variety of Ricks and Mortys with the same clinical coldness that Rick can often demonstrate. As he is not held back by a variety of personal vices, Evil Morty has the potential to be a vile Rick living up to his true potential. This is further compounded by the fact that Rick can and has been shown to transfer consciousness to different bodies. With that in mind, it is entirely possible that, at some point, a Rick took hold of a Morty’s body for some yet-unknown reason.

Secondly, some fans believe that Evil Morty’s turn to violence, and his need to break free from the Central Finite Curve, don't make much sense. Rick’s taunts suddenly get the better of this Morty, so he decides to apply such a level of technical expertise that he can create his high-tech eye patch before ultimately taking complete control of his Rick. It’s just such a strange moment for a Morty to snap, especially considering that it’s a rather small conflict compared to many of the others on display between Ricks and their Mortys.

Finally, Evil Morty has seemingly built his very own portal gun. That may not seem like a significant feat at first, especially due to his collected knowledge from Ricks and likely ability to study a portal gun. However, it may be one of the biggest pieces of evidence. The show has made a big deal about the specific ability to develop an original portal gun. Only Rick C-137, the cunning Rick Prime, and Evil Morty have managed to do this. It is just as possible, that Evil Morty is simply the only Morty to figure out how to build a portal gun, but this ability can be cited as a possible indication of Evil Morty’s hidden Rickness.

What Evidence Is There Against Evil Morty Being A Rick?

Evil Morty In Rick And Morty
  • Fans have seen Evil Morty’s supposed origin.
  • Ricks wouldn’t want to be Mortys.
  • Morty’s supposed motivations don't make sense for Rick.

A smoking gun for most fans is the fact that they have seen Evil Morty’s supposed origins in Season 7, Episode 5, “Unmortricken.” While audiences only see the moments in which Morty turns evil and nothing before that, this is a clear indication of Morty finally growing tired of Rick’s abusive ways. This point is in conflict with the earlier evidence, but it is widely cited as the reason why the "Evil Morty as a Rick" theory is dead, despite there not being any confirmation one way or another, There is always wiggle room depending on where the story goes.

It is also evident across the series that the many Ricks simply wouldn’t want to be Mortys if they could help. Most Ricks view Mortys as replaceable companions, and not anything special. This would make it hard to believe a sadistic Rick would want to take control of Morty’s body, even if it would help him enact whatever evil goal he had.

Finally, Evil Morty seems to be most interested in separating Mortys from the subjugation of Ricks, halting the cycle of abuse that Ricks inflict on Mortys. Unless a Rick took hold of a Morty’s body to see what Morty experienced and suddenly grew a massive conscience, it’s hard to believe that a Rick would be interested in atoning for the sins of all the evil Ricks. Evil Morty’s goal, while not necessarily fully fleshed out at this point, seems to be in rebellion against Rick in some form. Once again, something like this would be too familiar if it were a Rick that was behind the mind of Evil Morty.

The problem with this question is that in a series like Rick And Morty, almost anything could end up being revealed. Fans have seen enough of Evil Morty’s life to believe that what they’ve seen is in fact the truth with no other added layers. However, there may still be key events from this Morty’s life that are yet to be revealed.

Interestingly, the two pieces of information that fans should keep in mind don’t necessarily function as pieces of evidence. First, fans should consider that one of the major antagonistic forces for Rick throughout the series (even if it was unrevealed to the audience for years) was another version of himself, Prime Rick. Second, Dan Harmon said something interesting about Rick moving forward with Rick And Morty after the Season 7 Episode “Unmortricken” in an interview with Variety:

He is now the one who is existentially isolated. He is the one that doesn’t feel like he fits in the universe around him. Which puts him on the same level as a 14-year-old boy learning there’s multiple universes 10 show-years earlier.

If Evil Morty was revealed in some way to be a Rick, this might fall a bit flat and feel too samey to some audiences. It is also poetic that, moving forward past Season 7, Rick is in the same emotional position as Morty, putting him on a lesser playing field than that of the new main antagonist, Evil Morty. At the end of the day, the truth will come down to what any individual wants to believe, but odds are, Evil Morty is simply one bad Morty.

Rick And Morty is available to stream on Hulu.
