Thanks to all the dimension-hopping seen throughout Rick and Morty, it can be hard to remember which versions of characters are being seen. This is such a problem that some fans theorize that we see different versions of the titular duo Rick and Morty at various points in the series. The complex nature of the show has even called attention to these issues, as there are multiple versions of Beth as major characters in the series at the exact same time.

Fans are often purposely left to wonder about what they’re seeing, causing some viewers to wonder how or even if Rick’s original Beth survived the fatal explosion that truly kicked off the series of events. There are so many versions of Beth out there, and with one known as Beth Prime, no one can be blamed for struggling to keep up with all the show’s decisions. Luckily, the answer is simple. What the series has shown us of Rick’s original Beth seems to be the truth.

Notable Versions Of Beth

  • Beth C-137 (Deceased)
  • Beth C-131 (The current Beth)
  • Space Beth
  • Beth Prime (Deceased)

In the first episode of Season 3 of Rick and Morty, "The Rickshank Rickdemption," Rick’s backstory is explored in a meaningful way for the first time. While Rick claims at least some of it is exaggerated, it is later revealed to mostly be true. When the audience sees Rick's wife Diane and his daughter Beth being blown up, that actually happens. This means that Rick the show follows (Rick C-137) lost both his wife and his daughter in the same tragic moment. A twist came to light in Season 7, Episode 5, "Unmortricken." In the episode, it's revealed that Rick Prime had gone across different dimensions and killed various versions of Diane, eventually using the Omega Device to kill every existing version of her that still existed across infinite universes.

Rick Prime is why Diane has not been seen and cannot (as of right now) exist within the Rick and Morty universe. However, there can still be various other versions of Beth. There simply is no Beth C-137 because she was killed by Rick Prime, forcing Rick C-137 to go out and enjoy other dimensions that allowed him to have a family for companionship.

An interesting tidbit to keep in mind is that Rick is known to be capable of cloning Beth, meaning it is possible he’s made some kind of clone of his original Beth that is yet to be revealed. The only solace in the situation surrounding Rick’s backstory is that the bomb that killed Rick’s wife and daughter vaporized both of them instantly.

That question is a bit more complex than it might seem, at least at first. Obviously, the version of Beth that is featured throughout Rick and Morty is not Rick C-137’s Beth. Once again, Rick C-137, the Rick that is followed throughout Rick and Morty, watched his Beth (Beth C-137) die in the explosion along with his wife Diane. This question becomes more complex when considering whether the version of Beth in the series is actually the one that most people thought she was, or if she is actually a clone. Even Beth isn’t sure whether she’s a clone, which is made clear in the finale of Season 3, “The Rickchurian Mortydate:”

Am I the clone? Did the real me choose to leave, and I only think I chose to stay because that's what I need to think because I'm the replacement Beth?

In the final episode of Season 4, “Star Mort Rickturn of the Jerri,” Space Beth is shown for the first time. This version of Beth is a capable adventurer who starts off much more antagonistic to Rick and his family, but over time, becomes another part of the Smith family in some weird ways. The trouble is that Rick supposedly erased his memory of which Beth is the real clone, leaving the situation as a mystery for the audience to ponder. As much as fans like to speculate, there isn’t any indication as to what the truth is.

Some fans claim that there are rumored deleted confirmations that Space Beth is or is not a clone, but realistically, those kinds of confirmations don’t matter even if they are true. The final say is always going to come from the series itself. As Space Beth becomes more integrated into the family, an eventual reveal becomes less impactful anyway. Rick’s original Beth is gone, and even the original Beth that starts off the series is gone. It doesn’t really matter that Rick cloned a version of Beth at the end of the day. He is always capable of jumping to a new dimension with a new Beth pretty much exactly like the last one, even without the whole cloning business. It’s too bad the same can’t be said for his wife.

Rick and Morty is available to stream on Hulu.
