Long before Marvel Studios called upon the multiverse, Rick and Morty were already jumping across realities and treating fans to a wide array of hilarious variants. However, that sci-fi plot is starting to thicken for the show's creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland.
In an interview with ComicBook.com, Harmon explained how they initially tackled such a daunting prospect by having Rick Sanchez pull off his first big multiversal jump quite early in Rick and Morty. At the same time, it was Roiland who coined the term “cheat code” for the show’s reality-twisting antics
“[It's been] something that we've leaned into on this show,” Roiland claimed, adding that it’s the multiverse that offers them the possibility to introduce weird variants of the main cast and then go back to the standard character lineup as if nothing had happened. Both writers recently offered some form of guidance to their MCU counterparts by saying it can be easy to keep track of so many variants and timelines, though in their case it’s something they chose to embrace from the very start. "Not only is it a cheat code, but it's also this cool sci-fi... Awesome thing that is, that might even be f*cking real," Roiland said, referring to the possibility of the existence of different realities and multiversal travel, which could one day be proven by modern quantum physics.
According to both Harmon and Roiland, tapping into the multiverse has never been something they’ve been afraid to do. In fact, it’s that very resource that grants the series much of its unique humor, and why Rick and Morty is an advertising powerhouse. Ultimately, the multiverse play is what makes Rick and Morty “Not like the standard, you know, show, but that's still a thing we got to do.”
Rick and Morty season 6 will premiere on Adult Swim in September, although one of the aspects that might have fans more excited about this new chapter in the series is how the previous season’s finale adopted a more story-driven and canonical approach that gave further background to Rick's story. In that sense, it’s almost as if Harmon and Roiland are willing to do away with that cheat that the multiverse was up to this point and finally provide a straighter path for to show to eventually reach its end.
Luckily that won’t happen anytime soon, as the current 10-episode per season output should see Rick and Morty last until season 10 at least. In the meantime, those waiting for the show’s return can give MultiVersus a shot with Morty being added to the game’s roster imminently as part of the season one updates.
Rick and Morty season 6 will premiere on September 4, 2022.
