Remakes and remasters are becoming a staple of the gaming industry. Players want to replay their favorite games with more detail in vivid high-definition. Whether your someone who grew up in the '80s golden age of gaming or the ubiquitous '90s gaming decade, the idea of a remake or remaster is appealing.
The '90s saw the rise of hit platformers and a plethora of other genres. It contained a surge in popularity for video games as a whole. The following are superb '90s games that we know all too well. These are 10 retro games from the '90s that need a remake in 2020.
10 Banjo-Kazooie
Fans are still waiting for a sequel to Banjo-Tooie. It's not the sequel they need, but the one they deserve. There are reasons to believe that some of Banjo-Threeie's ideas went into Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge. The argument against this is the fact it takes place between Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie, whereas Banjo-Threeie would take place after.
Putting our hopes and woes for a sequel aside, development company Rare could resurrect Banjo-Kazooie by remaking the original game. Now owned by Microsoft, it could be an Xbox exclusive or be ported to Nintendo, reuniting once again.
9 Super Metroid
Fans of the Metroid game series were perplexed when they found out Metroid II: Return of Samus would be remade for the 3DS and not Super Metroid. Metroid II: Return of Samus is by no means a bad game, but it's nowhere near the masterpiece that Super Metroid is. The level design and boss fights such as Ridley in this game are absurdly challenging but rewarding. It has a near-perfect blend of combat and navigational puzzle-solving. Simply put, Super Metroid is a masterpiece that needs a remake.
8 The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Some fans may be shocked to see this timeless classic on the list since it was already remade for the Nintendo 3DS. Although the 3DS version is incredible, it's time for Nintendo to give The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time the console remake that's warranted. Considered to be one of the best games of all time (and to some the best game of all time), The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was very impactful when it released. It's one of the earliest examples of an open-world adventure game.
7 Pokémon Snap
If you're like many Nintendo 64 owners, you once owned this game and still have a cartridge that is collecting dust. Give it a blow, and it might even work. Long before Pokémon Sword and Shield, Pokémon roamed freely in Pokémon Snap. The game gave us insight into the actions of Pokémon and their emotions.
Give us a sequel, a remake, or something. Pokémon Snap was an entertaining game for the Nintendo 64. Taking photographs and sending them to Professor Oak for his rating was Nintendo ingenuity at its best.
6 Star Wars: Dark Forces
5 Resident Evil 3: Nemesis
The Resident Evil 2 remake was a runaway success, selling more than 4.2 million copies. In the natural order of things, it only fits that Resident Evil 3: Nemesis should be the next Resident Evil remake. Rumors suggest that there is already a remake of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis in the works. If validated, it would mark a historic day for a series that has been ported more times than we can count. With villain the Nemesis present, fear will be brought back to Resident Evil.
4 Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest
In a strange turn of events, Donkey Kong is kidnapped by King K. Rool in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. The player, playing as Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong, must progress through a whopping 52 levels to save Donkey Kong!
Interestingly enough, it is the best selling SNES game that was not bundled with the system. For having possibly the best soundtrack and gameplay ever seen in a Donkey Kong game, Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest stands out. The graphics are a bit dated, which is why it would benefit from a remake.
3 Grim Fandango
This adventure game is highly acclaimed for a good reason. The point and click puzzle-solving and storytelling of Grim Fandango are masterful. As Manny Calavera, a travel agent for the Department of Death, you must fight the corporate forces of corruption while looking out for your well-being. A remaster of Grim Fandango was made in 2015, but there's only so much a resolution increase can do. The remaster didn't change much, which is why fans are owed a remake.
2 Half-Life 2
Years ahead of its time, Half-Life 2 is a first-person shooter developed by Valve Corporation. Valve Corporation is also the developer behind games such as Portal,Counter-Strike,Dota 2, and Left 4 Dead. Without a doubt, it stands out for being more than a typical first-person shooter.
It's one of those games you'll be playing decades after its release. Fluid gameplay mechanics combined with smart pacing make Half-Life 2 exceptional. It has the whole package with unique gameplay, a compelling narrative, and robust enemy variety.
1 Super Mario 64
In Super Mario 64, Mario took flight, spreading his wings to new heights. For the first time, Mario appeared in an open-world 3D environment (aside from Mario Clash's limited 3D). The adventure has enormous replay value. Evidently, rescuing Princess Peach from Bowser never grows stale.
Super Mario 64 is in dire need of a remake. Furthermore, Nintendo Switch should bring this beloved platformer to the Nintendo Switch. There is plenty of demand for it. The graphics are a bit dated, but the gameplay holds up.
