One thing Capcom is known for, especially nowadays, is constantly re-releasing their most popular titles on new systems. This makes perfect business sense, as they are able to produce the games with minimal financial risk, and there's oftentimes already a built-in fan base willing to shell out the extra cash for the chance to play their favorite games with shinier graphics and sometimes even new features.
One of their more recent remastered efforts came in the form of Resident Evil HD, an HD facelift of the GameCube re-release classic, with greatly improved visuals, new camera angles, and other surprises in store. Resident Evil HD managed to sell over 1 million units, convincing Capcom to make remastered games a permanent part of their business model moving forward.
Not even half a year since the release of Resident Evil HD, Capcom announcedResident Evil 0 HD. Resident Evil 0 HD will join Resident Evil HD on eighth and seventh gen consoles (PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One), as well as PC. Capcom plans on showcasing the game at this year's E3 event in some capacity, and have released a trailer for the title to whet fan's appetites in the meantime.
The trailer sets up the story and showcases the early events of the game, which take place on the infamous leech-filled train, as well as a number of other locations. The game is set during the night prior to the mansion incident depicted in the original Resident Evil, as rookie S.T.A.R.S. member Rebecca Chambers joins her fellow Bravo Team comrades in the investigation of the grisly, cannibalistic murders in the Arklay Mountains. They come across a seemingly abandoned train that is filled with a variety of terrors, including the lumbering zombies that the series is known for, as well as an army of disgusting leech creatures.
In Resident Evil 0 HD, fans can look forward to having control of both Billy Coen and Rebecca Chambers, with the ability to switch between them at will. This mechanic creates unique puzzle opportunities for Capcom to implement, resulting in one of the better Resident Evil experiences all around.
As the trailer shows, this version of the game will feature enhanced graphics, making the already gorgeous Resident Evil 0 look even better. The new camera effects that were applied to Resident Evil HD seem to be utilized as well, and it is highly likely the alternate control schemes will be available as well. This means that those hesitant to try the older RE titles due to the dreaded tank controls will have other options at their disposal.
Its original GameCube releases saw Resident Evil 0 earn critical acclaim and financial success. Capcom eventually brought it to the Wii with added motion controls, but Resident Evil 0 HD marks the first time that the game is playable on a non-Nintendo system, which will mean that it's many gamers' first opportunity to experience it.
Having an HD version of Resident Evil 0 to play on the new consoles is greatly appreciated, but fans are still clamoring for a full remake of Resident Evil 2, in the same style. Resident Evil 2 is likely only second to Resident Evil 4 as the most popular game in the series, and there is even a petition that nearly has 38,000 signatures. Hopefully if Resident Evil 0 HD is just as successful as Resident Evil HD, Capcom will be convinced to finally take the plunge on remaking one of the most beloved survival-horror games of all time in RE2.
Resident Evil 0 HD will be available in early 2016 for PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
