Among the many characters to be found in the Resident Evil series, Chris Redfield can be considered the main protagonist since he’s turned up far more than any other protagonist. While he’s done a lot of good for the world, Chris has also done his own fair share of damage.
This has to do with his mentality not being in the right place at times, along with habits and mannerisms that ultimately led to adverse consequences. Chris will be returning in Resident Evil Village, where he’ll hopefully do better. Still, it’s worth looking back at the things he didn’t do right as well.
10 Pushing People Away Because Of His Depression
After losing his team on a mission, Chris became a depressive drunk who didn’t seek any help for his troubles. In its place, he withdrew himself from everyone else and deliberately went down a self-destructive part rather than seek help.
Those who did try to provide help were shunned, as Chris developed the tendency to attack the people who noticed he wasn’t right in the head. This had the effect of making Chris a total loner, all by his own hands.
9 Placing His Partners In Dangerous Positions Repeatedly
When a person has the track record of losing the ones he loves on a repeated basis, it’s only a matter of time before it’s clear they themselves are the problem. Chris has an extended record in this department, having lost almost everyone he’s been partnered with.
This includes Jill Valentine (who ended up being mind-controlled by Albert Wesker), his protege Piers (who sacrificed himself for Chris), and just about every team he’s been a part of.
8 His Tendency To Hold Grudges
Bringing in repeated character ticks shouldn’t be featured in the Resident Evil TV series, as this becomes a rather tired trope eventually. Chris has displayed his knack for grudges time and again, to the point where it dominates his personality.
His grudges against Wesker and the fake Ada Wong were responsible for Chris messing up many important points of his missions, something that plenty others had to pay for. It’s also his tendency for grudges that led him down to his self-destructive path.
7 Being Kicked Out Of The Air Force
Chris’ file states that he was in the Air Force as a young man, being there for years before being discharged under dubious circumstances. The exact reason is unknown, but the fact that he was discharged without honors in his early-twenties is evidence enough of misconduct.
It also doesn’t help that Chris has never been honored for his role in the Air Force, laying further claim that he was dishonorably discharged for pulling a highly disrespectful move. Not to mention how Chris himself makes sure never to mention his time back in the day.
6 Losing Focus While Being The Leader
When ranking the main characters in the Resident Evil series, Chris might fare well on an individual basis, but he doesn’t have a good record as part of a team. In Resident Evil 6, it was Piers who was essentially the leader while Chris spent most of the time freaking out and getting sidetracked.
Due to this, his team suffered from poor leadership and a lack of direction, inevitably finding themselves in compromising positions on more than a few occasions. It all comes down to Chris’ lack of focus.
5 Having A Death Wish
It’s time that the trope of having heroes with a death wish was changed in the Resident Evil series. Chris has shown several times that he has a death wish, always putting himself into lethal positions and where the danger level is always high.
This was the case in both Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6, where Chris got dropped off in hellish scenarios where the most likely result was his demise. This has led to his partner at the time being placed in the line of fire themselves, thus causing them to almost perish in Chris’ own death wish.
4 Assaulting An Officer And Suspension
In Jill’s case files during Resident Evil 3, Chris’ data shows that he decided to investigate Umbrella’s links to Europe. Due to being tied to his job, he deliberately began an aggressive streak, which culminated with him assaulting an officer and getting suspended.
He might have used this as a way to carry his investigations, but that doesn’t mean that attacking an innocent colleague can be justified. After all, it would have to be an extremely serious altercation for Chris to be suspended.
3 Causing Collateral Damage
Some fans think that the Resident Evil series got worse when things became a bit too over-the-top. This includes moments where the damage is astronomical, to the point where one would wonder if anybody’s even left alive within the aftermath.
Chris hasn’t shown much regard for this aspect, having destroyed entire areas during his battles. This means he’s been squarely responsible for any injuries to bystanders, something that Chris hasn’t been shown pondering over either.
2 Having The Habit Of Starting Bar Fights
His depressive state wasn’t reflected in the Resident Evil movies that were live-action but were shown in the games and animated movie chronology. During the times where he was depressed, Chris also became an alcoholic with a mean streak.
To this end, he took to not only frequenting bars but to use his drinking as an excuse to get into fights. This became such a habit that Chris ended up getting a job as a bodyguard to pay for his drinking, which inevitably led to more fights and more assaults against strangers.
1 Being Hypocritical To Leon's Depression
While there have been a lot of misfires where the cinematics is concerned in the series, Resident Evil: Vendetta is worth a watch. In this movie, Chris tracked Leon down during the latter’s vacation, where he found Leon drinking his feelings of guilt away.
Rather than sympathize with Leon due to having been the same way once, Chris instead attacked Leon for deserting his duties and feeling sorry for himself. Forget the fact that this was actually Leon’s vacation, Chris also overlooked how he had been even worse than Leon. Still, he judged his friend unfairly.
