Resident Evil fans had high expectations for PlayStation's State of Play for June 2022 and Capcom has delivered. The show started off with the announcement of a remake for Resident Evil 4, but that wasn't it for Resident Evil's announcements. Capcom also revealed that 2021's hugely popular Resident Evil Village would be coming to a new platform -- virtual reality. Resident Evil Village is officially in development for release via the PS5's upcoming PSVR 2 headset.

Capcom made the announcement with a short 90-second trailer during Thursday's State of Play presentation. The trailer focused entirely on first-person virtual reality gameplay, giving Resident Evil fans a close look at what Resident Evil Village will look like on PSVR 2. The good news is that it looks just as high quality as Resident Evil Village already does on modern platforms. The bad news is that the trailer was relatively limited in scope. Resident Evil fans will have to wait for a deeper dive into the VR game.

The trailer for Resident Evil Village VR on PS5 focused entirely on a single section of the game, that being the popular Castle Dimitrescu region. That means players got an excellent look at Lady Dimitrescu and her up close and personal interactions, including her intimately drinking blood from Ethan's wrist. Lady Dimitrescu's daughters are also heavily featured in the trailer, hinting at the intense encounters players will face with each of them.

While the Resident Evil Village VR PSVR 2 trailer doesn't show much in terms of gameplay, with little movement and only brief combat encounters are with the sickle-wielding Moroaicas, fans shouldn't stress. Capcom has confirmed that the full Resident Evil Village story is being converted into a virtual reality experience for PSVR 2. That likely means that there will be some changes, but the heart of the experience will be retained.

Resident Evil Village VR will, of course, require users purchase the PSVR 2 headset, which has yet to have its launch details confirmed. Capcom states it plans to use the PSVR 2 headset's 4K HDR display, eye tracking, and 3D audio to their fullest. Resident Evil Village VR will also require the use of the PSVR 2 Sense controllers for tracking hand movements in-game.

While initial details are limited, Resident Evil fans can perhaps look back to previous Capcom VR releases for insight into plans for Resident Evil Village VR. Resident Evil 7, for example, was fully released on VR -- and absolutely terrifying, at that. As such, expectations will be high for Resident Evil Village VR. Expect more information at a later date as PlayStation finalizes its release plans for the PSVR 2.
