Whether it be Chris Redfield and his Hound Wolf squad, or actual Lycans themselves, there's no telling what lies in store for Resident Evil Village players as they follow Ethan Winters in his search for Rosemary. On the other hand, Resident Evil Village fans have long since been aware that the coveted arcade-style Mercenaries mode would be making a return, although some may be surprised that it's not easily located at first.

Despite being the eighth installment in the franchise, Resident Evil Village is expected to have many homages to past Resident Evil titles. The game is barely out yet, though players have already known that saving via typewriters would make a return, minus the need for ink ribbons. Chances are there are tons more references to be discovered following its official release, though fans more or less already know what to expect in Resident Evil Village's Mercenaries mode.

How to Unlock Mercenaries Mode

Mercenaries mode isn't available for players to jump in right away. First, players will need to complete the Resident Evil Village story campaign, which gives access to the Extra Content Shop. Players may also need to complete a few challenges first, as the mode costs 10 CP. Starting from the main menu, players should then navigate to bonuses, then enter the bonus content shop to unlock the mode. Following that, players can easily access the mode by going to bonuses, then selecting The Mercenaries.

In total, there are 8 stages, although they are essentially four settings with two versions of each. Initially, only "The Village" is available, with subsequent stages being unlocked by acquiring an A-Rank on the previous stage for the first 4 stages, and a B-Rank for the final four stages.

How To Play Mercenaries Mode

Unfortunately, there aren't any co-op features in Resident Evil Village's Mercenaries mode. Instead, players start in the Duke's shop with the opportunity to buy any weapons or equipment. Once done, players are dropped in the Village and tasked with defeating a certain number of enemies within the time limit. After the target number of enemies is defeated, a goal will appear.

Touching the goal advances players to the next area, with any leftover money or time being counted towards the final score. The final score will be what determines the rank, with better prizes being given for high ranks.

Throughout the stages, Resident Evil Village players will also frequently come across blue and yellow orbs. Yellow orbs mainly serve to keep the time limit going, while blue orbs give players extra abilities, such as increased knife damage or a health increase. Players only get the choice of three per orb, though there is no limit to how many abilities one can have at a time, and stacking multiple of the same ability increases its effectiveness.

Resident Evil Village will be available May 7 for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
