Games With the Hardest "Best" Endings to Unlock

Some video game endings are harder to unlock than others; here are some titles that make getting the best ending almost impossible.

Most fans often make a joke about how RE games always end with the heroes flying away into the sunset aboard a helicopter, but this stereotype isn't true for all games, as they either change the formula or even offer up multiple endings, with some more difficult to achieve than others.

Resident Evil 3 introduces players to Nemesis and returns S.T.A.R.S. officer, Jill Valentine, to the mainline series. Players need to guide Jill through the torn streets of Raccoon City away from the deadly grasp of the hulking juggernaut, Nemesis.

In the original 1999 version, there were a total of three endings players could achieve: Bad, Good, and True. In order to achieve any of these endings, players needed to make a series of correct choices, with it being all too easy to make the wrong one and railroad themselves to a different ending. In order to achieve the True ending, players needed to choose to jump off the bridge and negotiate with Nicholai in order to achieve the canon ending.

In this spin-off light-gun game, the events of RE2 and Code Veronica are revisited and retold, adding some brand-new chapters for fans to sink their teeth into. It offers a unique experience from the mainline games, as players are put on rails, so they can't freely move through the various locations as they please. But, those who enjoy pumping zombies and creatures full of bullets will find this a satisfying enough experience.

Resident Evil spin-offs may not be as popular as the main entries, but a handful did live up to expectations despite their status in the franchise.

There are a total of three endings available in Darkside Chronicles, with the toughest among them being the good ending. Players need to defeat Javier before Manuela dies aiding in the fight Operation Javier 5. Resident Evil fans are likely used to time missions by now, but while it may not be the toughest ending to unlock in the series, it is still one that will challenge the players' gameplay skills.

The Specific Requirements Make This Ending Difficult To Achieve

Outbreak was a unique entry in the Resident Evil series, as it starred none of the main cast fans knew and loved, as well as offering a completely different gameplay style. The game was episodic and encourages co-operative play with the implementation of online co-op, but players could go it solo if they wished. There were a total of eight different characters with varying powers that could completely change gameplay, keeping it fresh and exciting.

Outbreak also contains a staggering number of end scenarios thanks to its number of characters and the different situations they could find themselves in. The secret ending lives up to its name and was notoriously hard to unlock because players would need to fulfill very specific requirements that, unless known about ahead of time, were incredibly easy to miss altogether. Players needed to play through as four characters (Alyssa, Mark, Jim, or George), ensure their respective partner survived (which has only become harder now the online element of the game has been discontinued), and ensure they did not use Daylight on themselves — or have one left in their inventory by the time the game ended.

Genre(s)
Third-Person Shooter

Separate from the main timeline of the Resident Evil series, Operation Raccoon City explores a non-canonical scenario surrounding the events of Resident Evil 2 and 3. Rather than taking on the roles of Leon, Claire, or Jill, players control one of 12 playable characters: 6 are part of Umbrella's Security Force, and 6 are in the USA Spec Ops. The plot mostly revolves around Umbrella recovering the sample of the T-Virus and tracing the source of the outbreak.

With Resident Evil Village on the horizon, there's never been a better time to look at the franchise's main playable characters.

Operation Raccoon City doesn't have many endings, with only a possible two. At the end, players will be faced with a choice to defend Leon from Umbrella, or to execute him. Should players choose to execute him, they will enter into a fight against Leon, and one that is much harder than anyone could have anticipated. He absolutely soaks up damage dealt while dishing out heavy hits himself. This is one ending players might need multiple attempts to achieve.

Near-Perfect Gameplay Is Required

Yet another spin-off on-rails light shooter game, Umbrella Chronicles repackages and retells the events of Resident Evil 0, Resident Evil, and Resident Evil 3, taking players on a tour de force through these classic tales with characters such as Wesker, Jill, and Rebecca returning as playable characters. The game goes through the scenarios in chronological order, but there are certain requirements players must fulfill to unlock scenarios that will provide a full and satisfying conclusion to the game.

The infamous Fall of Umbrella ending is a source of contention among fans, as many faced great difficulty unlocking it, finding the other ending rather lackluster. In order for fans to enjoy this ending, they must achieve grade A or above across all scenarios. This is certainly a tall order and may see some players having to revisit scenarios over and over again to achieve those near-perfect scores.

1 Resident Evil - Best Ending (Chris)

Losing Track And Missing A Key Character Is All Too Easy

Survival Horror

The first foray into the survival horror of Resident Evil was a rather tough one, as the layout of the mansion was confusing, there was no journal to track quests, and no mini-map to guide gamers where to go next. Instead, players had to rely on their memories of key rooms they had entered, along with the locations of certain puzzles they would no doubt have to backtrack to once they acquired the missing piece they needed.

It can be a challenging experience regardless of who players choose to play, but Chris' playthrough is even tougher, especially for those not overly familiar with Spencer Mansion. The "best" ending for Chris is undoubtedly the hardest to unlock. Rebecca needs to be saved within a three-minute time limit toward the end of the game where the dog whistle is located, and Jill needs to be freed from the cell. Ensuring players follow the right steps — and completing them within the allotted time — is difficult, for sure, and easy to miss unless players have a detailed guide to hand.
