Netflix has revealed the July 14, 2022, release date, along with three new posters, for the upcoming live-action Resident Evil series. Based on the popular Capcom video game franchise, the new series will tell an original story set across two different timelines.

The Resident Evil series is said to be set across two different timelines; the first focusing on teenage sisters Jade and Bille Wesker, and another following an adult Jade in a future where humanity is overrun by zombies. The official synopsis from Netflix reads, "Year 2036 – 14 years after a deadly virus caused a global apocalypse, Jade Wesker fights for survival in a world overrun by the blood-thirsty infected and insane creatures. In this absolute carnage, Jade is haunted by her past in New Raccoon City, by her father’s chilling connections to the Umbrella Corporation but mostly by what happened to her sister, Billie."

Three new Resident Evil posters were revealed by Netflix on Twitter with the caption, "Evil has Evolved." Each poster features the new logo along with a unique image displayed on a striking yellow background. In the first poster, the logo is surrounded by bubbly (probably infected) red blood, which is juxtaposed nicely with the yellow backdrop. The second poster features a red and white pill labeled "JOY" along with the Umbrella Corp logo. The last poster has a vile that looks to contain Resident Evil's infamous T-virus. It's labeled with a serial number and a handwritten X beside the word "positive." Interestingly, it also contains a small QR code, which may be too small and obscure for curious fans to scan.

Last year, Netflix announced the cast of the Resident Evil series, which includes Lance Reddick, Ella Balinska, Tamara Smart, Siena Agudong, Adeline Rudolph, and Paola Nuñez. Reddick confirmed on Twitter that he is playing Jade's father and famed virologist, Albert Wesker. Reddick is known for his stoic performances in the HBO police drama The Wire and more recently as Charon, the hotel concierge in the John Wick franchise. Andrew Dabb, whose previous credits include the CW's Supernatural, will serve as showrunner and executive producer for the series, which will contain eight one-hour episodes.

Netflix has been pursuing a number of Resident Evil projects. Along with the live-action series, the streaming giant is producing at least two animated projects, including the already-released 2021 animated feature Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness. Previous adaptations of the video game franchise include the Sony Pictures films starring actress Milla Jovovich. Sony produced six films starring Jovovich as an original character named Alice, a former security specialist and covert operative who uses her elite skills to battle the evil Umbrella Corporation. In 2021, Sony produced a reboot film titled Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. Set in 1998, it follows a group of survivors trying to survive a zombie outbreak in Raccoon City.

The live-action Resident Evil series premieres on Netflix on July 14, 2022.
