Highlights

  • The Resident Evil franchise is currently in a golden age, with mainline entries and remakes consistently receiving high praise and ratings.
  • Capcom has five separate Resident Evil projects in development, including the highly anticipated Resident Evil 9, which is all-but-confirmed to be actively in the works.
  • While a Resident Evil 5 remake is not as certain as Resident Evil 9, it is highly likely given the franchise's success with remakes and the hints and teasers provided in recent games. The other three projects are currently unknown, but fans have expressed interest in remakes and a potential spin-off centered around Hunk has been rumored.

The Resident Evil franchise is experiencing something of a golden age right now. While Resident Evil has remained a mainstay of the video game industry for almost 30 years now, its popularity has ebbed and flowed quite heavily over time, but since the release of Resident Evil 7 in 2017, the franchise has been pretty much non-stop ever since.

The Resident Evil franchise has seemingly found its golden formula for success, delivering a mainline entry, followed by remakes, then another mainline entry, and repeating the process. And what's been most impressive about this cycle is just how well these games have been received, with every mainline entry and remake but Resident Evil 3 earning above an 84 on Metacritic. It doesn't take much industry knowledge to predict that Capcom is going to want to repeat this cycle as much as it can over the next few years, and according to a recent leak by DuskGolem, Capcom already has five separate Resident Evil projects in development right now.

Capcom Allegedly Has Five Resident Evil Games In Development

Resident Evil 9 Is Inevitable

While the remakes are currently the most prominent aspect of Resident Evil's new cycle, the mainline entries pull in more than their fair share of revenue. For instance, while Resident Evil 2 Remake has shipped an incredibly impressive 13.6 million units, Resident Evil 7 shipped 12.7 million, and Village has still managed to ship 9.49 million. With such successful numbers all around, it's only natural that Capcom wants to capitalize on as much of the franchise as possible, and that'll include another mainline entry.

On February 5 2024, leaker DuskGolem commented in their Discord channel that Capcom had five Resident Evil games currently in development, and the only one they mentioned by name was Resident Evil 9. Resident Evil 9 being in active development is a pretty open secret at this point, with countless leaks cropping up over the last year or so claiming that Chris Redfield will play a major role in the game, among other features. At this point, Resident Evil 9 is a matter of when, not if.

A Resident Evil 5 Remake Is Almost Guaranteed

Though it's a little less inevitable than Resident Evil 9, a Resident Evil 5 remake seems practically guaranteed at this point. As mentioned plenty of times in this article already, Capcom has struck gold with its Resident Evil remakes, and there's no way that it's stopping now. The next logical step for the franchise is a remake of Resident Evil 5, and Capcom has already laid the groundwork for it nicely, with Resident Evil 4 Remake and its Separate Ways DLC directly teasing the sequel through its sequences involving Albert Wesker, specifically the one in Resident Evil 4's post-credits scene that shows the mastermind looking at an image of Resident Evil 5's Progenitor Virus flowers.

Capcom's Three Other Resident Evil Projects Are Complete Mysteries

Right now, it's a complete mystery what Capcom's other three alleged Resident Evil projects are, though there are plenty of RE projects fans would be desperate to see. A Resident Evil - Code: Veronica remake has been something fans have desperately wanted for years now, and Capcom would be leaving money on the table if it didn't produce one sooner or later. A remake of the original Resident Evil has also been something that fans have ruminated on, with the franchise set to hit its 30th anniversary in 2026. There are also rumors going around right now that Capcom could be working on a brand new Resident Evil spin-off game, potentially centered around the mysterious character Hunk. Though fans will have to wait for some official announcements to find out about any of these rumored projects.
