A few days ago, the first installment in the Resident Evil series celebrated its 26-year anniversary, with the game being released on March 22 all the back in 1996. With Resident Evil Village selling more than five million copies as of January, it's clear that the influential horror franchise is still going strong, even if it did have a rocky trajectory around games five and six. To celebrate the milestone of reaching more than a quarter of a century, Capcom was due to make an announcement of some sort, but it turns out that fans were left underwhelmed.In a post on Twitter recently, the Residence of Evil profile posted about the "special message" that the developer was set to unveil, which it turns out was simply a "thank you" that greets visitors when they go to the official Resident Evil website. Many people have commented below the tweet about how disappointed they were. User KazuyaShiroe joked that the team at Capcom was perhaps busy playing Elden Ring and simply forgot to make an announcement that would be satisfactory.Many were hoping that they would be waking up to some Resident Evil Village DLC news, which is something that fans have been holding out for for some time now. On top of the thank you note on the website, the message also says that the studio will be releasing an article in April, which will be an additional thank you to the "ambassadors." But again, there doesn't seem to be anything forthcoming about some new content. While last year's 25th anniversary did offer some merch on the website, as well as messages from the team, some may feel that 26 years is not much of a special year, even for a long-running series.
However, others have been celebrating the anniversary all the same. Slitterhead developer Bokeh Game Studios announced a video would be coming soon and uploaded an image on Twitter on March 22 which showed the original Japanese covers of both the first Resident Evil and Silent Hill games.
Given that Resident Evil is one of the most influential horror games ever, there's a strong community of fans that are always clamoring for more content. With Village DLC on people's minds and talk of a remake of Resident Evil 4 still doing the rounds, the fact that Capcom didn't make a significant announcement a few days ago has left some fans feeling a bit let down. But at least the studio thanked everyone for their support over the years.
Resident Evil Village is now available on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
