Capcom has given Resident Evil fans new hope that Resident Evil Code: Veronica could be getting a remake at some point down the line. Even though it's not a numbered entry in the long-running survival-horror franchise, Resident Evil Code: Veronica is an extremely important game story-wise, and was developed as the true successor to Resident Evil 2. Despite this, Capcom has seemingly skipped over Code: Veronica in its line of Resident Evil remakes.

The first Resident Evil remake came in 2002 when Capcom remade the original Resident Evil from the ground-up with significantly enhanced graphics and new gameplay features. Nearly two decades later, Capcom moved forward with a highly-successful remake of Resident Evil 2, which spawned remakes of Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4. Chronologically, Code: Veronica takes place before Resident Evil 4, which is why some fans of the franchise were disappointed when the RE4 remake was announced before a Code: Veronica remake.

While Capcom still won't commit to the possibility of remaking Code: Veronica, it seems as though the company hasn't ruled it out. Capcom was recently asked by a shareholder about only doing remakes for the numbered entries in the series. Capcom responded with a vague answer that it is "carrying out discussions regarding the future expansion of this series so it can be enjoyed by a wide audience." This is far from a confirmation that a Code: Veronica remake is in development, but it also means that Capcom is at least open to the possibility, giving Resident Evil fans new hope that it will happen at some point down the line.

If Capcom does decide to produce a full-blown Code: Veronica remake, such a project is likely years away. According to the latest rumors, the next Resident Evil game is Resident Evil 9, not a remake. This is good news for Resident Evil fans who prefer completely original adventures to remakes, but it's bad news for those wanting to relive Code: Veronica with improved graphics and modern quality-of-life features.

Some fans think that Capcom will continue ignoring Code: Veronica with its remakes and instead jump to a Resident Evil 5 remake next. This would make some sense as the Resident Evil 5 story follows up on some loose Wesker threads left by RE4, but it would be a shame as Code: Veronica is the game that brought Wesker back to begin with.

While a Code: Veronica remake may or may not ever happen, at least the game is playable on modern platforms. The HD remaster of Code: Veronica is playable on the latest Xbox consoles, and the game is also playable on PS5 for those with a PS Plus Premium subscription.

The HD version of Resident Evil Code: Veronica is available on PS3 and Xbox 360.
