While the Resident Evil 3 remake may not be the brightest star in Capcom's constellation of Resident Evil reimaginings, the game has some good points. The Perfect Dodge mechanic allows players to keep up with the faster Nemesis and the wide spaces serve as a good precursor to the Resident Evil 4 remake's fleshed-out European locales. Most importantly, the Resident Evil 3 remake gives fans one final adventure in Raccoon City before the United States government ordered its destruction.

Resident Evil 3 uses some characters from past games but it does introduce a few new ones. One of the most important characters is Carlos Oliveira - a member of the Umbrella Biohazard Countermeasure Service (U.B.C.S.) and the game's secondary protagonist. After encountering Jill Valentine and the horrors unleashed upon Raccoon City, Carlos becomes a hero to Jill and the other survivors. It's a shame that Carlos's journey seems to end after Resident Evil 3 because the character has so much more to offer the franchise when it comes to the overarching story.

Carlos Turns From U.B.C.S. Corporal To Racoon City Hero

As a member of the U.B.C.S.'s Alpha Squad, Carlos rescued civilians by evacuating them to a repurposed subway train. The rescue effort failed however when the Nemesis attacked the tram and forced U.B.C.S. commander, Mikhail Viktor, to sacrifice himself in an attempt to destroy the bio-organic weapon. Carlos was then instructed to search and detain Dr. Nathaniel Bard - an Umbrella virologist who was working on a cure for the T-Virus. It was during this second mission that Jill - who was onboard the tram before its destruction - contacted Carlos about the events that transpired, including the betrayal of U.B.C.S. member Nikolai Zinoviev. She also told him of the Nemesis's survival and its goal to eliminate all former Special Tactics And Rescue Service (S.T.A.R.S.) members - including herself.

Already unsure of his allegiance to Umbrella, Carlos momentarily abandoned his mission and rushed to save Jill. Despite arriving too late, Carlos brought a T-virus-infected Jill to a hospital and endeavored to find a cure for her. His mission to detain Nathaniel Bard proved to be unsuccessful as the doctor was already killed by Nikolai. Carlos was able to find a vaccine, however, and administered it to Jill before she succumbed to the T-virus. The rest of Carlos's adventure involves him helping Jill fight the Nemesis and Nikolai. He weakens the Nemeis with heavy machinery and corrosive chemicals found in an underground NEST facility before joining Jill in stopping Nikolai from escaping and taking another sample of the T-Virus vaccine. Carlos then personally flew the helicopter that took him and Jill outside Raccoon City just before its destruction.

In one of the endings of the original Resident Evil 3, Carlos can be seen sharing a drink with Jill before going their separate ways. It isn't known what Carlos does after this, only that he still harbors resentment toward Umbrella for what the company did. Aside from this epilogue, Carlos makes no further appearances in the Resident Evil franchise.

There Could Be More To Carlos's Story

From the standpoint of the remake, Carlos has so much more to offer in terms of story. He is undoubtedly determined to put a stop to Umbrella and avenge those who were lost in the Raccoon City Incident. Given his skillset, he is more than capable of fighting alongside Jill and her companions. Carlos can wield various weapons and has a mean punch that can almost rival Chris Redfield's.

It would be great to have a Resident Evil game starring Carlos. The title could pick up on his quest to stop Umbrella and give him a spotlight away from Jill. Not to be outdone by other protagonists, the game could also give more emphasis on his backstory and motivations. Whether he is actively searching for Umbrella or being pulled out of retirement for another job, Carlos deserves either a satisfying continuation or conclusion to his story.

The Resident Evil 3 remake is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
