A notable leaker has claimed that Resident Evil 9's development is on track, and that fans won't have to wait long to see the game. This is a development on a previous rumor from the same source, who recently reported that the next mainline entry in the Resident Evil series had been internally delayed.

The Resident Evil franchise is a veritable powerhouse for Capcom, as well as a pioneer of the survival horror genre in the games industry. The series first debuted in 1996 with the titular Resident Evil, and still holds a loyal fanbase to this day, eager to experience what the next chapter of the critically-acclaimed saga may hold. The last mainline entry in the series was Resident Evil Village, which launched nearly three years ago, and speculation about when Capcom will break its silence on the unofficially-dubbed Resident Evil 9 has been steadily mounting.

Resident Evil 9: Every Rumor So Far Explained

Resident Evil 9 still hasn't been officially confirmed by Capcom, but that hasn't stopped a mountain of rumors and leaks coming out surrounding it.

Credible Resident Evil leaker AestheticGamer (aka Dusk Golem) recently claimed that Resident Evil 9 was facing internal delays. However, they have since recanted that report. The insider now states that the reveal for Resident Evil 9 should take place "pretty soon," with a targeted release window of early 2025, with January being Capcom's internal target. AestheticGamer posted a lengthy thread on Twitter reporting the rumor, and also revealed intriguing details about Resident Evil 9's potential 7-year development cycle.

Capcom was Working On Resident Evil 9 and Village at the Same Time

The leaker claimed that Resident Evil 9 started development in early 2018 "as a possible RE8," and that Resident Evil Village also went into development with the same purpose around that time. Village then transitioned to a spin-off game, before pivoting back to being the eighth entry in the series. AestheticGamer alleged that because of this back and forth, Resident Evil 9 and Resident Evil Village were being worked on simultaneously. This apparently isn't unusual, as Resident Evil projects are "usually greenlit in batches" to ensure "near annual" releases, with another batch of Resident Evil games reportedly in the works.

Resident Evil 9 is inevitably coming, as the series simply has too much momentum for Capcom to ignore. If the leaks hold true, it may well be the most ambitious entry in the franchise to date, with the largest budget and longest development time behind it. With summer approaching and several gaming events like the Xbox Games Showcase, Summer Game Fest, and the rumored PlayStation Showcase arriving alongside it, Resident Evil 9's reveal could be right around the corner.
