On January 21 at 2pm PT, fans of Capcom's Resident Evil franchise can tune in to a special showcase event that will give them an idea of what to expect from the series' future. Besides the fact that Resident Evil 8 will be featured prominently during the showcase, Capcom has been rather vague about what exactly fans can expect from the event. Now a new Resident Evil 8 teaser trailer has been released that also includes some fresh information on the showcase.

The Resident Evil showcase on January 21 will be hosted by Brittney Brombacher, and it will feature a brand new trailer for Resident Evil 8 as well as a gameplay walkthrough. Resident Evil 8's gorilla man boss can be seen in the teaser, with players seemingly encountering him in a stream along with a horde of blade-wielding monsters. Resident Evil 8 protagonist Ethan Winters defends himself with a shotgun in the clip, and players can also see a glimpse of his quick-select inventory as well.

The very brief new Resident Evil 8 gameplay on display in the teaser trailer shows that the game should be readily familiar to those who played through Resident Evil 7. The more supernatural enemies, like Resident Evil 8's strangely tall witch/vampire woman, are definitely departures from the norm, however.

While Resident Evil 8 will be the main focus of the showcase, the teaser trailer also suggests that fans of the franchise have more to look forward to. Brombacher says at the end of the trailer that fans will learn more news "related to the Resident Evil franchise," but stops short of offering any further details. A separate PlayStation Blog post hyping the event teases a few "surprises" for fans at the showcase, so it could really be just about anything.

The teaser trailer doesn't reveal what other Resident Evil news fans may be able to look forward to during the showcase, but some leaks may have already let the cat out of the bag. According to recent leaks, a new Resident Evil multiplayer game may be in development, with its reveal taking place at the Resident Evil showcase. Members of the Resident Evil Ambassador program have already been invited to test the game, so one has to imagine that if it's not at the showcase, the reveal is still going to happen sooner rather than later. The exact nature of the secret Resident Evil multiplayer game remains a mystery, however, so hopefully fans get answers sooner rather than later.

Meanwhile, it's possible that the Resident Evil showcase will have announcements related to the Resident Evil franchise as a whole, not just in terms of video games. This could include a look at the upcoming Resident Evil movie reboot, or perhaps some new information on the Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness Netflix series. Fans will just have to keep speculating until the showcase on January 21.

Resident Evil 8 is in development for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X.
