Fans of Resident Evil 7 may be interested to see what the game was going to look like, and a bunch of images have appeared online which show that this entry in the series was more in line with RE6. Featuring some of the most gut-wrenching moments in horror gaming, RE7 represented a return to form for Capcom's flagship survival franchise. Its switch to a first-person perspective, along with visuals that seemed to have been inspired by P.T., were a well received by fans. With the success of Village, not to mention Resident Evil 9 rumored to be in development, the series is at an all-time high, something which it hasn't experienced since the early 2000s with the release of RE4. The studio is continuing to move forward not only with brand-new entries, but with additional remakes that bring back the classics for modern gamers. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard was just the beginning of this new lease on life, but it was originally going to be much more similar to the previous games.RELATED: Resident Evil 7 Streamer Beats Game in Public LibraryAccording to industry insider AestheticGamer, as spotted by DSO Gaming, Resident Evil 7 was initially going to be closer to RE6 when development first started. Images uploaded to Twitter show screenshots from a now-scrapped version of the seventh installment, showing Leon Kennedy as the protagonist. There's also some artwork, including an early version of the Baker house. Allegedly, the game was going to be set in a fictional European city "loosely inspired by Venice," with Leon and Sherry as the main characters. It was also possible RE7 was going to feature "choice" moments, in which time would slow down and the player would have to make a decision. This sounds like a similar mechanic that was used in 1999's Resident Evil 3: Nemesis.

In general, it sounds like this version of RE7 was going to carry on in the same fashion as the game that came before it. Although the sixth entry is not quite the worst Resident Evil game ever made, it did confirm for many that the series had lost touch with its survival horror roots, gearing much more towards bombastic action. Who knows what the seventh installment would have been like had Capcom seen this early version through to the end, but many will feel confident that it wouldn't have revived the franchise the way Biohazard did.

With the Resident Evil 4 remake due out soon, the developer is continuing to keep the RE name alive and well. It may have had a rocky period during the mid-2000s, but the Biohazard that released helped inject something fresh into the IP, and it's remained in good standing ever since.

Resident Evil 7 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
