Resident Evil 4 is one of the most-celebrated games of all time, so it's no surprise Capcom has ported it to nearly every gaming platform imaginable. Most recently, Capcom brought Resident Evil 4 to the virtual reality space through Resident Evil 4 VR. Resident Evil 4 VR earned rave reviews from critics, with many hailing it as one of the best VR games made to date, but there was no denying that it was lacking some features found in other versions of the game.

One of the big omissions when Resident Evil 4 VR launched was the lack of Mercenaries mode. Mercenaries, for the uninitiated, is a bonus mode in Resident Evil 4 that challenges players to kill as many enemies as possible within a time limit. It was popular enough to see it return in future Resident Evil games and even got its own spinoff game on the Nintendo 3DS, but it was absent from Resident Evil 4 VR at launch for whatever reason.

Now, as announced during the Meta Gaming Showcase event, Mercenaries has surprised launch for Resident Evil 4 VR. After downloading the latest update, Resident Evil 4 VR players will be able to play Mercenaries in all its glory, along with some added bonuses.

Resident Evil 4 VR Mercenaries includes Ada Wong, HUNK, Albert Wesker, and Krauser as playable characters, with fans able to compete for spots on the online leaderboards and take on new challenges built specifically with VR in mind. Three challenge modes were highlighted in the latest Resident Evil 4 VR trailer in the form of Wild West, Avast Ye Matey, and The Cover of Night, which all provide unique ways for players to experience Resident Evil 4 VR's Mercenaries mode.

The trailer also confirms that Resident Evil VR's Mercenaries mode unlocks new content for the story mode, making it a worthwhile endeavor for any RE4 VR players out there. Players can unlock content like Leon's Mafia Suit, Ashley's Knight Suit, the popular Chicago Typewriter weapon, the Golden Rocket Launcher, the Golden Handgun, and the Golden Broken Butterfly. There are also new variations on story mode to check out as well, including Big Head Mode, Classic Horror Mode, and Fast Forward.

This update goes a long way in making Resident Evil 4 VR more content-complete, though it's still missing some content found in other versions of the game. Even so, this latest update should give Resident Evil 4 VR players plenty more to do in the game.

Resident Evil 4 VR is available now for Meta Quest 2.
