Tips for Getting the Frugalist Achievement

Because the goal is to avoid healing items, players should capitalize on long-range guns to minimize the chances of getting hit. They should also play the game on a lower difficulty—preferably in NG Plus—to benefit from the standard modes’ perks. (Read on for more tips.)

  • The Assisted mode in the Resident Evil 4 remake comes with auto-heal. In this difficulty, Leon’s HP regenerates once he reaches the critical point—indicated by the flashing red icon. Having this setting on is a must for getting the Frugalist achievement because it eliminates the need for recovery items.

2. Wear the Chicken Hat Apparel

  • Beating the Leon “S+” Kennedy in a New Game rewards the player with the Chicken Hat, an accessory that decreases received damage. Put this defensive accessory on in the Extras menu to survive enemy strikes without consuming herbs or using First Aid Sprays.

3. Maximize Long-Range Power

  • A good strategy for getting the Frugalist trophy is capitalizing on assault rifles. These long-range weapons reduce the chances of getting hit and, eventually, the need for recovery items.

4. Exploit Explosives

  • A couple of hand grenades and explosive bolts are ideal for clearing jam-packed areas. These items push the enemy crowds away, keeping the player safe from the attacks.

5. Sell All Recovery Items to the Merchant

  • Although not expensive, healing items can be sold for a good price. By trading them with the Merchant, the player can invest in weapon upgrades to make the most of their Frugalist run.
