Resident Evil 4 Remake follows Leon S. Kennedy on his quest to find and rescue Ashley Graham, the president's daughter. His search leads him to sinister land in which a bloodthirsty cult resides and, to make matters worse, each member of the cult seems to have been affected by the Plaga infection, a horrendous infliction that makes them much more difficult to kill.

There are countless ways to defeat enemies in Resident Evil 4 Remake, but those hoping to preserve whatever ammo they have obtained will likely opt for using Leon's Combat Knife as often as possible. Sadly, the Combat Knife will break if the player uses it too much, but there is a way to repair it.

While playing through Resident Evil 4 Remake, players will be forced to battle an array of monstrous foes. At the beginning of the game, the only weapons Leon has access to are his SG-09 R pistol and his Combat Knife, two extremely helpful weapons that can often mean the difference between life and death. Players can also find a shotgun during Chapter 1, but those who missed it will be forced to rely solely on the equipment Leon starts his journey with until they reach Chapter 2.

Both weapons come with downsides; however, the pistol's ammo is limited, and the Combat Knife has a durability meter. While pistol ammo can be found while exploring the world of Resident Evil 4 Remake and also be made via the crafting menu, keeping the Combat Knife in check takes a little more work.

Relying too heavily on most of the knives available in Resident Evil 4 Remake will cause them to break. If the Combat Knife breaks, Leon will not be able to use it while fighting enemies. This also means that he will not be able to use the knife to stealthily kill his targets or deflect incoming blows, which can make certain encounters much more challenging than they need to be.

Knife durability in Resident Evil 4 Remake

If the Combat Knife breaks and the player loses access to their melee weapon, they can find substitutes by exploring the world. Kitchen Knives are especially convenient replacements, seeing as they can be found quite frequently, but the Combat Knife is much more reliable.

The condition of the Combat Knife can be seen in the bottom right corner of the screen, so players should be sure to monitor its durability whenever they feel the blade is nearing its end. If it breaks and the player is struggling to get by without it, they can also alter the difficulty settings.

How to Repair The Combat Knife in Resident Evil 4 Remake

The Merchant in Resident Evil 4 Remake

If the Combat Knife breaks during Chapter 1, players will need to continue progressing the story until they reach Chapter 2, where they will meet the Merchant. Unlike most NPCs in Resident Evil 4 Remake, the Merchant is much friendlier and will allow Leon to browse his wares and purchase whatever he has in stock.

Through the Merchant, players can also choose to Tune Up whatever gear they have and repair the gear they have broken. To repair the Combat Knife, Leon will need to spend 4,000 Pesetas, and though this seems a little expensive, it's worth it in the long run.

The Tune Up menu in Resident Evil 4 Remake

From the Tune Up menu, players can also choose to upgrade the Combat Knife's Power and Durability which, once done, will make the Combat Knife an incredibly useful weapon.

The Merchant can be found and interacted with several times throughout the story, so if players can't afford to upgrade or repair the Combat Knife during their first encounter with him, they should continue progressing the story until they meet him again.

Resident Evil 4 Remake is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
