Capcom has released a new gameplay trailer for the Resident Evil 4 remake that confirms some major gameplay changes while also showing off enhanced combat and the infamous "Chainsaw Man," aka Dr. Salvador. As expected, Resident Evil 4 had a major presence at the latest Resident Evil Showcase event, with Capcom giving fans a lot of exciting new footage to check out.

The new Resident Evil 4 remake gameplay trailer started with protagonist Leon S. Kennedy entering the villager's home from the beginning of the game, much like he does in the original. However, it quickly becomes clear that the house in the Resident Evil 4 remake is much different from the one fans may remember. It's bigger, grimier, and generally made to look creepier. This time around, Leon has to go into the basement to investigate the house, and that's where he fights his first infected villager, as opposed to right on the first floor as in the original version of the game.

The Resident Evil 4 remake is clearly going for a scarier atmosphere than the original RE4, but that doesn't mean it's going to be dropping its action or cheesiness. The gameplay jumps to the famous village scene from the original Resident Evil 4, where Leon has to take on a swarm of villagers all at once. It's here where fans can see that Leon still has his signature melee attacks at his disposal, including a devastating roundhouse kick. But he has some other impressive moves up his sleeve this time around as well.

In the Resident Evil 4 remake, Leon can kill enemies with brutal melee attacks using his knife in a manner that was not really possible in the original release. Beyond that, Leon can parry with his knife to ward off enemy attacks. This includes parrying a chainsaw, which shows that while the Resident Evil 4 remake seems to be more serious than the previous versions of the game, it's still going to be plenty ridiculous and over-the-top.

Leon's encounter with the Dr. Salvador seems to have some extra wrinkles to it this time around, with Salvador using his chainsaw to cut down a scaffold and block a path. One has to imagine that this will make this section of the game more difficult, as Leon will have less room to run. However, he does now have the ability to light cows on fire and have them rampage into the villagers, so that should help even the odds a bit.

The Resident Evil 4 remake looks like it will be paying homage to the original game without being afraid to expand its horizons a bit. Whether it lives up to the high bar set by the original release remains to be seen, but fans will find out when the Resident Evil 4 remake release date rolls around next year.

Resident Evil 4 launches March 24, 2023 for PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X.
