Capcom just released its remake of Resident Evil 3, but it's clear that the company is far from done with the franchise. Resident Evil 2 Remake came out just last year, for example, and there are rumblings that Resident Evil 8 is slated for 2021. Now, it seems that a new Resident Evil game is clearly in the works to follow it in 2022: Resident Evil 4 Remake.

Considering it's one of the highest-selling and most popular entries in the franchise, it doesn't come as much surprise that it is in development. Capcom recently released a survey asking about interest in future Resident Evil installments, which really just narrowed it down to Resident Evil 4 or Code Veronica.

VGC, a reliable website who has revealed information in the past and has a proven track record of sources, has confirmed that RE4 Remake has entered full production with a release window of 2022. M-Two will be taking lead of its development, as it has reportedly been prepping for this project since 2018. Other Capcom internal teams and external studios are likely to support M-Two with this project.

It's also worth mentioning that the director of the original Resident Evil 4, Shinji Mikami, was offered the opportunity to lead the project himself but declined. He has reportedly provided advice on its direction, though, and it's likely the game will maintain the spirit of the original. After all, one of the biggest lingering questions is if the RE4 Remake will be more like RE 2 or RE3 in terms of approach, so it's reassuring that the new project has Mikami's blessing.

Since its initial release in 2005, Resident Evil 4 has been re-released, ported, and remastered about as often as Skyrim, but it's never received a full remake. Its various ports and remasters are currently available on PS2, GameCube, Wii, PS3, Xbox 360, PC, Xbox One, and PS4, so given that and RE4 Remake's purported release year, it's a good chance that this is also a PS5 and Xbox Series X project, though that doesn't rule out the remake being available on current-gen hardware either. For now, fans will just have to wait and see what Capcom and M-Two plan on sharing.

Resident Evil 4 Remake is reportedly in development.
