For whatever reason, Capcom decided to release the remake of Resident Evil 4 on PlayStation 4 but not Xbox One, as well as current-gen systems, but it seems that some people are not happy with the game's performance on the older console. With the recently launched remake currently wowing fans and critics, the Resident Evil franchise continues to be in a good place. As one of the most successful survival horror franchises in the world, inspiring many other titles over the years, it's good to see Capcom's series still flying high.

In addition to PC, the Resident Evil 4 remake is playable on Xbox Series and PS5, and those who are still on PS4 were fortunate enough to get a version of the game as well. However, it probably won't surprise too many to learn that the PlayStation 4 release does not really hold up too well when compared to more contemporary systems.

In the latest edition of Digital Foundry, Eurogamer tested all console versions of the Resident Evil 4 remake, which included PS4. While this version is more than playable, the results show that there are some visual and performance issues on the older system. For example, with a framerate of between 35-50 fps, the report concludes that it's quite "unstable." Even the PS4 Pro has lackluster performance, with the game sometimes dipping to 20 fps. However, even with "visual cutbacks" and low framerates, Eurogamer says the game is still "respectable" on the system.

A number of fans on Reddit seem to agree with the criticisms. For example, user Sadistic_Loser says the frame rate does indeed dip and enemies "look like they were recorded using stop-motion animation." It's quite clear to some that the game was not optimized to run on previous-generation hardware, which is probably why Resident Evil 4 hasn't come to Xbox One, despite past rumors that it may launch on the older Microsoft console. Whether Capcom will be able to address the issues on the PS4 version remains to be seen, but at the time of writing, the developer has yet to make any comments.

Even with a modern reimagining of the story and general improvements to the original 2005 release, Resident Evil 4 still left some stuff on the cutting floor. While the absence of QTEs is probably a blessing for many, there were perhaps some things that fans would have liked to see kept in or added. However, that doesn't detract from the high praise that's currently being lavished on the remake.

Resident Evil 4 is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
