Silent Hill 2 Remake is among the most highly anticipated titles in development. Announced during the Silent Hill Transmission in October 2022, the remake was announced to be in development at Bloober Team, the studio behind The Medium and Demon's Souls (2020). In the time since its announcement, Bloober Team has discussed the ways in which Silent Hill 2 Remake takes inspiration from Capcom's Resident Evil 2 Remake, which many consider the benchmark of modern remake formulas. While the two titles' connection is likely restricted to approach, the direct adaptation of one Resident Evil 2 feature would be a game changer for Silent Hill 2 Remake.

Silent Hill 2 Remake has yet to receive an official release window, despite being revealed nearly a year ago. The game is set to deliver a rather "safe" remake, as Bloober Team hopes to maintain the original's essence while updating the experience for the modern generation. To do so, they are internally taking inspiration from Resident Evil 2 Remake. While Konami claims that Capcom's remakes play no part in Silent Hill 2 Remake's development, the title's Lead Producer, Maciej GÅ‚omb, shares that, "We are aware of the Resident Evil 2 remake's resounding success, and we are aware that the game is considered a benchmark on how to release a game anew after a long break..."

HUNK in 4th Survivor

Resident Evil 2's story mode is revered as one of the greatest survival survival-horror experiences of all time. Once players made it through the main game with both playable Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield, and getting an A rank with one of them, an additional scenario, The 4th Survivor, was unlocked. In The 4th Survivor, players control Hunk, the secret final survivor of Raccoon City's destruction. Players guide HUNK through a short but challenging sprint through the sewers, helping him escape Raccoon City with a sample of the G-virus.

In 2019's Resident Evil 2 Remake, another extra mode was introduced, The Tofu Survivor. The mode was unlocked upon completion of The 4th Survivor scenario and functioned as a parody of HUNK's tough-as-nails romp through the sewers. Each successive completion of the Tofu Survivor unlocked another food-based protagonist, including Konjac, Uiro-Mochi, and Flan. Each character was given a unique loadout, providing players with a fresh challenge on each playthrough.

Silent Hill 2 Remake Could Adapt Resident Evil 2's Extra Modes

There are a variety of ways in which Silent Hill 2 Remake can lean on Resident Evil 2 Remake, and introducing modes like The 4th Survivor could go a long way to adding something new and exciting to the highly-anticipated title. The world of Silent Hill is rife with horror-tinged mystery and additional modes could allow fans to dig deeper into the foggy town and its psychological torments. James' search for his wife unveils a pretty shocking truth during the title's main narrative, and a new mode could explore that truth in greater detail, or follow it up with a modern twist. Likewise, a mode like The Tofu Survivor would be right at home in Silent Hill 2, as the series has a history of jarringly silly elements, such as the infamous Dog Ending.

Silent Hill 2 Remake has yet to receive an official release date, but insiders believe it will arrive in early 2024. There's no telling just how the title's Resident Evil 2 Remake inspirations will manifest, but given the standard of excellence that Bloober Team is aiming for, the connection bodes well for longtime fans of the Silent Hill series. Should Silent Hill 2 Remake adopt Resident Evil 2's extra modes, fans could be in for quite a few surprises. Fans hoping for more news surrounding the Silent Hill 2 Remake should stay tuned, as the upcoming one-year anniversary of its announcement is prompting speculation that an update may be released in October 2023.
