Warning: The following contains spoilers for Rent-a-Girlfriend Season 3, Episode 6, "Final Scene and Girlfriend," now streaming on Crunchyroll.

With only the last scene left to be filmed for the ambitious movie-making project, the realization of parting ways as Chizuru’s partner-in-business has finally dawned on Kazuya. Despite being happy for what the two have achieved over the course of just a few months, the thought of finally concluding the film project is a gloomy moment for Kazuya since it means the end of working alongside Chizuru.

Even though Kazuya and Chizuru’s relationship has come a long way, especially with the jump from rental to a professional one, the two still have a long road ahead of them before they become a legitimate couple. Rent-a-Girlfriend has been subtly hinting at the two ending up together anytime soon, especially with Chizuru finally seeing Kazuya in a different light. However, several obstacles stand in the way of their sentiments, with the primary one being Kazuya’s ‘real’ girlfriend Ruka.

A Movie-Making Trip

Kazuya and Chizuru Flustered

The final scene for the film was supposed to be shot at the scenic resort of Madarao, where the stars shine brightly in the dead of night. Since the production team had to shoot their own short-film, it was up to Kazuya and Chizuru to film the last scene for their amateur movie. However, the simple errand turns into a trip laden with romantic booby-traps as Yaemori’s plan for pushing the two closer comes into play.

Instead of booking a separate room for Chizuru and Kazuya, Yaemori purposely reserves just one room for the two, forcing them to share the night together. While Kazuya flusters to the idea of sleeping in the same room and tries to get a separate one, Chizuru steps up and simply agrees to taking the single room. Chizuru has a history of distancing herself from Kazuya and any situation that forces her to be intimate with him, yet she showed no hesitation to the notion of sleeping in the same room as him.

Chizuru’s nonchalant reaction to the entire ordeal is a sign of her heart finally thawing for Kazuya. Between her willingness to sleep next to Kazuya and her impromptu appearance in a Yukata, things have finally started looking up for Kazuya and his one-sided sentiments. However, it’s far too soon for a confession to come through from either side.

An Intimate Revelation Under the Stars

Kazuya and Chizuru Under the Stars

While much of the episode's focus remains on Kazuya's rambling, the actual purpose of the trip also gets its fair share of screen time. Kazuya and Chizuru set out post-midnight to shoot the scene with the backdrop of a starry sky. Before they can film, however, Chizuru halts the filming to let something off her chest. Kazuya initially assumes that Chizuru might confess her feelings – an impression that viewers also received.

Instead, she shares a personal detail of her life with Kazuya, letting him in on the driving force behind her ambitions. Chizuru has been rather reserved and cautious about her personal life for the most part, with Kazuya barely knowing anything about Chizuru’s life. For her to open up about the source of her ambitions is a big deal, serving as a major milestone in their relationship.

Chizuru words hit hard with Kazuya as his inappropriate thoughts about her wane, and the only thing he could focus on was the trust and gratitude Chizuru had for him. With tears running down his face, Kazuya shoots the final scene under the starry sky, reveling in Chizuru’s divine beauty. For Kazuya, this final scene is a bittersweet moment seeing how he gets to capture Chizuru in such a captivating state, yet this also means that their producer-actress relationship has come to an end.

The Barriers to Kazuya and Chizuru’s Relationship

Ruka and Chizuru

Kazuya and Chizuru have reached a point where it’s mutually implied that the two bear sentiments of love for another. Even if this were false, Yaemori’s interventions have communicated the fact that feelings do exist on both sides. Despite these clear signs, the two still refrain from taking the next step time and again. For Kazuya, the main issue is his promise to Chizuru of not falling for a rental girlfriend, along with the doubt of her actually reciprocating his feelings.

Chizuru also bears the same issues, yet one major obstacle in her way is Kazuya’s ‘real’ girlfriend Ruka. Since Ruka and Kazuya are technically a couple on a trial basis, Chizuru can’t confess her feelings even if she wanted to. Having Ruka around is slowly becoming a pain in the neck for Kazuya, yet he still doesn’t have the heart to break up with her for good. Until this hurdle is cleared from the field, the possibility of Kazuya and Chizuru becoming the real deal seems to be slim for now.
