The Handler class for Gunfire Games’ upcoming Soulslike Remnant 2 has just gotten a leg up for becoming a fan favorite, now that its adorable dog companion has been revealed. Sequel to 2019’s Remnant: From the Ashes, Remnant 2 introduces some new features to the gameplay loop while also retaining some of the elements that fans enjoyed most, such as the ability to play co-op with up to two other people.

With Remnant 2, Gunfire has decided to revamp the previous game’s archetypal progression system by implementing more distinct classes, each with its own set of perks and skills that are unlocked by gaining experience and leveling up. One of the most recently revealed archetypes in Remnant 2 is the Gunslinger, whose forte is exactly what one would expect: skillful shooting at high speeds to fill a ranged DPS role.

Another archetype that has recently been shared by Gunfire is the Handler class, which will play a support role in the game. The developers seem to be focusing on improving combat in general in Remnant 2 by not only providing a more visceral feeling to weapons, but also offering gamers a variety of ways to play. The Handler will make the Soulslike less arduous for those who prefer to play solo, thanks to the archetype's permanent canine friend who both provides companionship and helps in battle.

Remnant 2’s furry team member will have three modes: Guard Dog for drawing enemy aggro by howling, Support Dog for AOE healing of the player and nearby allies, and Attack Dog for increased DPS. The doggo, who will likely strongly remind many players of Fallout 4’s beloved companion Dogmeat, wears a bandana around its neck that will change colors to provide a helpful visual indicator of which mode it is in.

Gamers also won’t have to constantly worry about their dog friend dying because, according to IGN’s preview, it will come with a decently sized health bar. There is also a ping system to make it easier to send the dog conveniently away while playing stealthily, for example, or call it back for assistance with taking down enemies. Players will also have the ability to send the animal to a designated area of the map and attack foes there, and these commands can apparently be made with a simple button press.

It's not yet clear how many archetypes there will be in Remnant 2, as Gunfire is doling out the information. But players won’t be stuck with the class they select at the beginning of the game, as all the starting archetypes can be unlocked via gameplay and switched to at will. One class having a canine companion, however, will likely influence which one many players choose to try out first.

Remant 2 is currently in development for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
