Arkane Studios has built a reputation for making high-quality first-person shooter experiences, from 2012's Dishonored to 2021's Deathloop. Because of Arkane's solid track record, expectations are high for Redfall, a new co-op shooter where players explore the titular town of Redfall, Massachusetts, fighting an assortment of vampires and cultists. What's been shown of Redfall so far looks solid enough, but there is one big downside when it comes to the game's co-op.

Redfall is a 4-player co-op game with four different playable characters for players to choose from. Each character has their own unique abilities and distinct personality, so playing through the game in co-op is necessary for players to truly get the full Redfall experience. Unfortunately, it's been confirmed that Redfall campaign progression is tied to the host, so those joining in co-op don't get any story advancement in their own saves.

This is disappointing news for those looking forward to playing through Redfall with their friends, but it's not all bad news. It's also been confirmed that Redfall co-op players will at least be able to keep their upgrades and loot, so their time isn't completely wasted in another player's Redfall world. They can then have a much easier time going through the game on their own save, though it's safe to say many fans would have preferred if progression was universal for all players.

Redfall was first announced last year, but fans just got their first good look at gameplay at the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase event this past weekend. The Redfall gameplay on display showcased the various playable characters that players will be able to choose from, and how they interact with one another. Of course, it also showed plenty of action, with the Redfall playable characters making their way through town and blasting away the vampires pursuing them.

The game was originally expected to launch at some point this summer, but it was recently confirmed that Redfall's release date was delayed to 2023. A specific release date in 2023 has yet to be mentioned, but it was confirmed during the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase that all the games on display would be available for Xbox within the next 12 months. That means that fans should be playing Redfall by this time next year, though it's always possible another delay could happen.

Whenever it does launch, Redfall will be a day one Xbox Game Pass game, thanks to Microsoft's acquisition of ZeniMax, which includes studios like Arkane and Bethesda. Now that fans have gotten their first good look at gameplay and learned other details about the game, they can look forward to more info coming to light in the months ahead.

Redfall will launch in 2023 for PC and Xbox Series X.
