Highlights

  • With long gaps between game releases, Rockstar fans could benefit from a Red Dead Revolver remake to tide them over until a full sequel.
  • Remakes like Resident Evil 4 & Final Fantasy 7 have shown that updating classics can bring in new players while satisfying old fans.
  • A potential tie-in between the past and future Red Dead Redemption games could make an upgraded Red Dead Revolver an exciting game for all fans.

It is well known that Rockstar's next major game release is Grand Theft Auto 6, the first major release since 2018's Red Dead Redemption 2. Following the release of the second game in the Red Dead Redemption franchise, fans began to speculate on what a potential third game in the prolific Western series could be. Though the stories of most of the major characters of each game are seemingly closed, there are still many possible ideas for what could be done in a sequel or prequel. If there is to be a third Red Dead Redemption game, it will probably not be for a very long time and, as such, could benefit from some supplemental material in between releases.

Rockstar typically releases games many years apart. By the time GTA 6 releases, it will have been over 10 years since GTA 5. Following that standard, and the fact that AAA game development has been seemingly taking longer and longer as time goes on, fans won't even know if a third Red Dead Redemption is in the works for many years. To reassure fans that there is more in store for the Red Dead universe, and to keep the fan base satiated in between releases, Rockstar could do well to develop a project that sets up the next game in the series. The most obvious choice would be to return to the game that started it all.

The Red Dead Game That Needs To Release Before Red Dead Redemption 3

Red Dead Revolver Remake

In the current gaming market, remakes are still popping up everywhere. Remakes, or in some cases, remasters, are an excellent way to bring old fans back to a classic game in a whole new way while still managing to appeal to new players. The popularity of remakes is still very evident, with games like Resident Evil 4 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth being showered with praise and awards. Even if the game is not entirely made from the ground up like the aforementioned remakes were, the addition of new textures, mechanics, and online features can be enough of a draw.

Red Dead Revolver is the perfect candidate for this re-release treatment, as it is the game that started it all. This is the game where the name "Red" came from, as it represents the main character, Red Harlow. Red Dead Revolver is an exciting and fast-paced arcade-influenced action/adventure game that lets players progress through a cinematic story while upgrading weapons and equipment. It's a unique experience when compared to the massive open-world sequels that would come later, but it is still a fun and immersive game none the less. With a story set even before the events of Red Dead Redemption 2, it could be interesting to return to.

How It Can Set Up Red Dead Redemption 3

If Rockstar did decide to remake Red Dead Revolver from the ground up, there would be some interesting opportunities to add new elements to the game. For example, plot points could be added to the story by way of secret missions or cutscenes that reference or even include characters or events from the Red Dead Redemption games. Even subtle additions like the ability to play as John Marston, Arthur Morgan, or other characters from later games in Red Dead Revolver's multiplayer could be a nice way to tie them together subtly.

Depending on the direction the game takes, there is plenty of opportunity for references and tie-ins. Though it is still unknown if Red Dead Redemption 3 is a prequel, if it is, then perhaps elements from Red Dead Revolver's story could be used in the future Rockstar game. Regardless, a remade Red Dead Revolver would be a fun and exciting game for new and old fans. At this point, fans will just have to wait and see what the future of the Wild West franchise holds.
