Red Dead Redemption 2 boasts an extremely lifelike and detailed world for players to experience and explore. Now, thanks to a mod, PC players are able to immerse themselves in Red Dead Redemption 2's world in VR thanks to a new mod.
The VR mod is developed by Luke Ross, who many may recognize as the developer behind a similar VR mod for Grand Theft Auto 5. The Red Dead Redemption 2 mod utilizes much of the same technology and techniques that the mod for Grand Theft Auto 5 used, so it seems that Ross has found a great way to translate games developed by Rockstar Games to VR.
Red Dead Redemption 2 does feature a first-person perspective without any modding required, but Ross' mod translates that camera control entirely to a VR headset. Videos showing off the mod make the camera movement with the mod look pretty smooth, and even show players being able to move their head to poke out from cover and shoot enemies with an extended arm. The mod is only available for single-player at the moment, but it does allow players to play through the entirety of Red Dead Redemption 2's story with VR enabled. However, it does look as though the game pulls the player out of the first-person perspective every once in a while, like when Arthur throws a guard off a train.
One downside of the mod is that it is not compatible with any VR motion controllers, meaning that players still have to perform actions in-game using either a gamepad or mouse and keyboard set up. This is not surprising, though, as modding Red Dead Redemption 2 to allow players to independently control Arthur's arms with motion controllers would be a massive undertaking. Other concerns raised about the mod have been some players experiencing motion sickness as so much of Red Dead Redemption 2 involves horse riding.
Regardless of its issues, the work completed by Luke Ross is extremely impressive. The mod does require a very high-level PC to run properly, but it looks like a fun experience for any players who own a VR headset and want to see what living in the Wild West would be like. The mod is a nice addition to the game and is a welcome one for players that have been hoping for Red Dead Redemption 2 to receive some form of single-player DLC. Hopefully, Rockstar Games has something else in mind to add to the game that players can look forward to in the future.
