Red Dead Redemption 2 is a game that’s stunned many players with its myriad of tiny details, but some fans still lament what it’s missing. One player has taken their disappointment to the internet, and it seems that some fans are in agreement at the oversight.

Rockstar Games puts tons of tiny details into its games, to the point that some hidden details in Red Dead Redemption 2 have gone unnoticed for years post-launch. Of course, it’s not possible to please everyone. While some games have the function in question, many titles don’t, so Red Dead Redemption 2 isn’t alone in this oversight.

A Reddit user going by tthrowaway8282 took to the site’s Red Dead Redemption forum to talk about the game’s cats, and the lack of ability to pet them. Cats can be found throughout Red Dead Redemption 2 and its online component in areas of civilization, including towns and farms. However, unlike dogs in Red Dead Redemption 2, there’s no option to directly interact with the cat by petting it.

It seems the OP isn’t alone in this disappointment, as several other users popped up and shared in their frustration. Of course, Red Dead Redemption 2 is intended to give players a taste of life in the old west, so it's not exactly mandatory for it to include a way to interact with the cats. As one user pointed out, cats typically served a purpose on farms or near barns, helping to keep rodents at bay and not necessarily being the warm and friendly lapcats that people might automatically think of these days.

With that said, gamers seem to gravitate to being friendly with dogs and cats in video games. It’s common to see any new game involving a dog to spawn the question of whether the player can pet them. When it comes to cats, gamers are similarly sentimental, even voicing concern after watching the teasers for Forspoken. Gamers were worried about what would become of the Frey's cat Homer while she was fighting in another world. Some gamers have even experienced mild disappointment in Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, where dogs are present and can be interacted with, but not petted. Meanwhile, cats are nowhere to be found in the latest adventures of Hyrule.

Sadly, Red Dead Redemption 2 is extremely unlikely to ever see any form of expansion or additions, as production of new content for the game and its online component have ceased. Fans will have to wait and see if Red Dead Redemption 3 or the rumored Red Dead Redemption remake will include cats that can be petted.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
