The camera function in Red Dead Redemption 2 inspired a player to use a fishing photo they took in a creative and comedic way. Photo modes are a common inclusion in many AAA games and have helped the graphical fidelity of titles like Red Dead Redemption 2 shine.
Photo modes in games usually exist as a way for players to take virtual photos of their favorite game characters and settings. They grew in popularity with the eighth generation of consoles, which had a heavier focus on encouraging people to share screenshots and clips of gameplay such as with the Share button on the PS4's DualShock 4 controller. Some gamers have used these modes to bring some imaginative ideas to life, such as using the photo mode in Marvel's Spider-Man to make posters styled after Thor: Love and Thunder.
One Red Dead Redemption 2 fan used an in-game photo they took of themselves fishing in a hilarious fashion by printing it out, framing it in their home, and telling visitors it's their "great uncle Artie." The photo taken by this player, who goes by leblaun on Reddit, shows player character Arthur Morgan holding what appears to be one of the legendary fish in Red Dead Redemption 2 and is placed in a frame that seems to be appropriately styled after the game's aesthetics. Leblaun added that no one has yet questioned the photo's authenticity.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of several games that includes a photo mode and contextualizes it as an actual in-game camera, which helps taking pictures not break the immersion. This also helps players take self-portraits that are stylized authentically to the period during which Red Dead Redemption 2 takes place. Another example of this kind of photo mode would be the selfie camera seen in Marvel's Spider-Man, which lets players pose their playable characters as if they were taking actual selfies. These photo modes also offer the same level of control seen in other games, which people have used to do things like recreating shots from The Last of Us TV series in The Last of Us Part 1.
Although photo modes have become more commonly implemented, there are some games in which it is not present at launch, if at all. God of War Ragnarok received a photo mode in a December 2022 update and the Resident Evil 4 remake launched with a photo mode, but other games like the remake of Dead Space do not yet have a photo mode despite releasing in the same time frame. With AAA games being more graphically detailed than ever before, the inclusion of photo modes helps creative fans make the most of these games' strong visuals and will likely continue to become more common.
