Rockstar Games, a development studio known for their attention to detail, is excellent at recreating real-life locations as the setting of some of its games. This is seen heavily in the Grand Theft Auto series, which primarily features fictionalized versions of real major cities, such as New York, Los Angeles, and Miami, as settings. But Rockstar also drew inspiration from real locations in Red Dead Redemption 2, whose five states—Ambariono, New Hanover, West Elizabeth, Lemoyne, and New Austin—are all based on real states in the U.S. Even though the game doesn’t feature modern recreations of these places, there are a few locations that are still recognizable.

One Red Dead Redemption 2 player discovers a possible real-world inspiration for Braithwaite Manor from Rockstar's popular Wild West game.

A Reddit user named pablopolitics shared a discovery they made while cleaning out the house they grew up in. They found what appeared to be an old photo of a plantation. However, the plantation shares a striking resemblance to the Braithwaite Manor in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Many of the replies pointed out that what pablopolitics found was a photo of the Oak Alley Plantation, a popular tourist attraction in Vacherie, Louisiana. The plantation is a popular filming location, with various productions, such as TV shows, movies, and music videos, being shot there. It was also one of Rockstar’s primary inspirations for the Braithwaite Manor in Red Dead Redemption 2, which is why it looks so much like it. The level of detail Rockstar Games put into the recreation of Oak Valley is nothing short of impressive. Some might even mistake the game for real life if they didn’t know any better. Unlike the manor that it inspired, however, Oak Alley is still standing.

It’s an interesting thing to see how real-life places are recreated in video games. As much as games are a great way to escape into foreign worlds, they can also provide a different way of experiencing what’s familiar. Whether it’s the post-apocalyptic ruins of San Francisco and Seattle in games like Horizon Forbidden West and The Last of Us Part 2 or historically accurate versions of places like we see in the Assassin’s Creed franchise, video game developers often recreate these locations with an acute precision that makes the worlds they’ve made all the more immersive for players to experience.
