Now that the Xbox Series X is much easier to find on store shelves, some gamers are finally considering next-gen peripherals that were released alongside new consoles. The Razer Kaira Pro wireless Xbox gaming headset may have been originally released three years ago in 2020, but its high-quality design has granted lasting power to yet another Razer device.

Razer’s Kaira Pro wireless headset aims to deliver crystal clear sound from both Xbox consoles and mobile devices in one convenient, powerful, and stylish package. Of course, that’s the goal of most headset companies, so how does the Razer Kaira stand up in reality? Is the Razer Kaira for Xbox a worthwhile headset option?

Comfort

Razer kaira pro for xbox comfort

The Razer Kaira Pro approaches comfort much in the same way as any other mid-range headset. The earcups feature thick, memory foam padding covered by a breathable fabric, while the headband has some of the same along the center of the headset.

Despite having these standard bells and whistles, the headset is definitely felt the entire time it’s worn. The top of the headband often feels like there’s no padding at all, while the earcups themselves have a rubber border that can start to give noticeable pressure after an hour or so, meaning that gamers with glasses won’t find relief with the Kaira Pro. Additionally, when removing the headset, there is that slight tinge of pain that comes with most ill-fitting headsets. In some cases, extending the length of the headband only makes it more loose, not more comfortable, so there's not really any recourse for the unwanted pressure.

Still, Razer manages to make up for these comfort shortcomings by keeping the headset fairly light. The headset weighs less than a pound and this light weight really reduces the amount of strain or pain a player might feel, while the extendable headband makes it a comfortable enough headset for players with larger heads, which is still somewhat rare. Plus the super wide, rotating ear cups are made with a high quality fabric that keeps ears cool, allowing players' ears to be perfectly protected even through hours of gameplay.

Design

Most gamers are skeptical of headsets with removable microphones, but there are a lot of them out in the world now, and it’s time to reconsider their worthiness. For some gamers, the removable mic is simply not going to be useful; it should just stay permanently attached. However, players who game during commutes, are students, or otherwise find themselves gaming away from home will have a lot to love about the design of Razer’s wireless headset. There is a built-in mic that's meant to be used with wireless devices in lieu of the detachable mic. Unfortunately, this embedded microphone is awful and just shouldn't be used.

Being able to remove the mic keeps it completely safe without disrupting the connectivity. The connection is pretty snug, which can be annoying for homebodies, but is exactly what’s needed for gamers on the go and suggests a long lifespan. The Kaira Pro’s compact design doesn’t stop there either. The rotating earcups make it easy to slip the entire headset into thin laptop bags or even briefcase-style bags.

The extension can make the headband much longer, and somewhat wider. Gone are the days of central adjustments, apparently, replaced by the much more flexible and durable design implemented by the Kaira Pro (and most other modern gaming headsets). The overall design of the Kaira can certainly fit a wide range of people, and ultimately is the best wireless headset for Xbox players with average to larger than average head sizes.

One design aspect that’s fairly different from other headsets is the number of buttons on the earcups. PC players will probably hate this; both sides are very busy, and it takes a bit of time to get used to it. However, the target audience for this headset are Xbox players, and the convenience of the buttons far outweighs any perceived overcrowding. Every function a player needs is right on their headset: volume, chat mix, Bluetooth, light modes, preset audio modes, and of course a mute switch. The Razer Kaira Pro’s button array means no more having to deal with menus in the middle of a match, and that’s a game changer.

Software

Razer's peripheral app is great on PC, offering a lot of customization options, not only for Razer headphones, but all Razer devices. It's definitely helpful to be able to fine tune the preset modes, but these changes don't apply once the headset is being used with the Xbox. While the headset is useful on PC, there are definitely better Razer headsets made specifically for PC gaming rather than for the Xbox.

The arguably more important console version of the app is quite the sad affair, with even the thumbnail being absent (replaced by Microsoft’s generic headset icon instead). The app only offers control for Razer headsets, with separate apps available for other Razer console accessories. The Razer headset app has some seriously negative reviews that report issues like the sound bars being immovable and navigation being laggy. Unfortunately, the app couldn't even be tested with the Kaira Pro headset because Razer's own app couldn't recognize the device, even as the Xbox was confirming it was connected. It also gave pairing instructions that didn’t match up with the instruction manual provided with the headset; trying both methods yielded no results.

To be fair, there is a terrible lack of sound apps for the Xbox, so it may feel like enough to even try to put out a companion app, but most players would probably be grateful to avoid it altogether.

Performance

Razer kaira pro for xbox performance

The Razer Kaira Pro offers a somewhat surprising level of quality as far as performance goes. Clearly, the corners cut on the software and comfort made room for premium internal specs. The Razer Kaira, when tested, performed nearly as well as the SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro wireless, which is GameZXC’s best headset pick, and a headset that costs about twice as much. In particular, the amount of noise that fails to get through is incredible. It’s almost as difficult to hear through the Razer Kaira as it is to hear through actual noise-cancelling headsets, making it a fantastic compromise for gamers looking to get a similar experience for much cheaper.

The sounds are rich, crisp, and can offer deep basses that deliver on all fronts. The bluetooth connectivity was exceptional too, even when connected to both the Xbox and a smartphone. The game chat mixer dial does an excellent job of pairing your bluetooth device correctly, meaning that when turning down game music, you aren’t turning down your friends’ voices. That does make it less than ideal for answering calls, but watching videos or even getting in some Genshin works perfectly.

There are three preset audio modes for the Razer Kaira: bass, surround, and FPS. The difference between bass and surround was negligible, although if you really love bass it’s a nice little extra to have. The FPS mode was shockingly effective. It really boosts the sounds of footsteps and other small movements like opening doors or knocking over a bottle. While it’s nice to be able to fine-tune these settings through an app, the fact of the matter is that the presets are well-balanced and most console gamers wouldn’t be able to do a better job.

The mic is similarly impressive, blocking out sounds that aren’t a player’s voice with expertise that belies the affordable cost of the Kaira. It’s not perfect, and loud, nearby sounds will still get picked up, but the directional mic makes it difficult for noise from the opposite side of the input to come through, regardless of volume. Razer’s mic performance was yet another welcome surprise, especially considering how sensitive some console headsets can be.

Verdict

The Razer Kaira Pro packs a big punch for such a small price tag. It’s why GameZXC named it the best headset for Xbox and why Xbox players looking for an upgrade should seriously consider the Kaira Pro.

While there could definitely be some improvements made on the overall comfort of the headset, particularly for smaller head sizes and gamers who wear glasses, it’s far from uncomfortable for most players. As for the rest of the headset, the Razer Kaira is remarkably on par with much more expensive models. The thick ear cups offer incredible noise suppression, the detachable mic does a fantastic job of isolating a player’s voice, and the bluetooth connectivity is seamless with mobile devices, even serving as a decent headphone option for other bluetooth devices like laptops. PC and Playstation players won’t be happy with this headset, but for Xbox players the Razer Kaira Pro has everything they need, making it the best wireless headset for the Xbox Series X.

Although Xbox players might find this headset to be one of the best options for Xbox, overall the Razer Kaira is a fairly mid-range headset that may or may not satisfy players on PC or PS4|5. For the price though, it’s definitely worth giving a look, especially if you already have other Razer peripherals.
