Highlights

  • Nintendo GameCube games, especially rare ones like the Metroid Prime and Zelda: The Wind Waker combo pack, have become increasingly expensive.
  • Buying the games separately is cheaper, but the combo pack is a highly sought-after collector's item due to its rarity.
  • A lucky Reddit user found this super-rare Metroid Prime/Wind Waker GameCube combo pack at a sale.

A lucky Nintendo GameCube fan recently made a "holy grail" game find by picking up a copy of the Metroid Prime and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker dual pack. There are all kinds of rare Nintendo GameCube games that go for ridiculous prices online, and this combo pack is just one of them.

While nearly all retro games have skyrocketed in price these last few years, it seems Nintendo GameCube titles especially have gotten more expensive. Obviously, this applies the most to the rarest GameCube games, with titles like Pokemon Box going for thousands of dollars online. The Metroid Prime/Zelda: The Wind Waker bundle isn't quite as expensive as Pokemon Box, but it still sells for a pretty penny on sites like eBay.

Right now, the Metroid Prime/Zelda: Wind Waker combo pack is listed for around $1,000 on eBay. The combo pack was only released as part of a special GameCube holiday bundle in 2005, which is why it's so hard to track down nowadays. Reddit user Gr8Jhin managed to do just that, though, finding a high quality copy at a "nerd sale." According to the Reddit user, it cost them "around 1k," so in line with how much it goes for on sites like eBay.

Buying Metroid Prime and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker separately would be significantly cheaper, but of course, the individual games aren't nearly as rare as the combo pack. Even so, Zelda GameCube games are all quite expensive, and anyone hoping to get them all can expect to pay a hefty chunk of change.

Besides this combo pack, there's also the standalone Wind Waker, Four Swords Adventures, the special Ocarina of Time/Master Quest port, and Twilight Princess. Out of these standalone Zelda games, Twilight Princess tends to be more expensive, though all of them go for more than brand-new game releases do nowadays.

Unfortunately, those who aren't interested in collecting but still want to play these games don't have a ton of other options. Wind Waker was remastered for the Wii U, but it costs more now than it did at launch. The Wii U Twilight Princess HD port is even more expensive than Wind Waker, and Four Swords Adventures is trapped on the GameCube. Ocarina of Time playable through the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack, but that's about it. Hopefully the rumors about the Wind Waker and Twilight Princess Switch ports are true so Zelda fans can relive the classic games without breaking the bank.
