Video game movie adaptations are nothing new, and despite constantly releasing to negative reviews and weak box office performances, it doesn't look like Hollywood is giving up on them. The next video game movie set to release is an adaptation of the arcade classic Rampage from San Andreas director Brad Peyton and starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Naomie Harris, and The Walking Dead's Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

Rampage's first trailer is out now, and in many ways, it looks like a typical "science gone wrong" disaster flick. Regardless, the movie does look like it could make for a fun couple of hours at the theater, thanks to the over-the-top action, comedic delivery from the main cast, and the novelty of seeing these giant monsters come to life on the big screen.

It seems unlikely that Rampage will buck the trend of bad video game movies, but reaction to the first trailer has been mostly positive. Even so, some fans may be upset by changes to the source material. For example, in the Rampage video games, the giant beasts are mutated people, whereas in the movie, it appears as though regular animals have been become massive instead.

This is a rather big change tothe  plot of the games, but the appeal of seeing George, Ralph, and Lizzie in a movie may be enough for fans to forgive it. And it's not like the Rampage games were all that concerned with story, anyway; they're just games about smashing buildings as giant monsters.

Anyone looking for giant monsters smashing buildings should be satisfied with the Rampage film adaptation. And while some fans may be disappointed at the changes to the plot, the film does appear to be paying homage to the arcade classic in other ways. In this first trailer alone, we can see buildings destroyed in a manner that looks very similar to how they are torn down in the game, and there are also shots of helicopters that almost seem ripped straight from the game itself. The full film likely has other fun references to the game packed in its runtime, but fans will have to wait until next year to find out.

Rampage hits theaters on April 20th, 2018.
