Raft is normally a game where music is rare and atmospheric. The default time period between each track is "Long," but players can shorten this in the audio settings or turn off the music and use another app to play something else in the background.

There's one other way to get more music in Raft: the radio. Players can buy a radio from a vending machine on Tangaroa, or they can get one for free if they're lucky enough to find the Shipwreck Island. However, this island has only a 2 percent chance of appearing instead of a regular small island, which means it doesn't even show up on the receiver.

How the Radio Works

Raft Radio Held

Unlike most other electronics in Raft, the radio doesn't need any batteries and won't wear out over time. Players will only need one radio for any given playthrough unless they build a raft so big that they can't hear it in every corner.

Like other placeable objects, players can only put the radio on the raft. However, the radio starts playing whenever it's the active item, which means players can take it with them and listen to some tunes as they explore the islands.

The music the radio plays is somewhat random, but in general it's much more active and less atmospheric and moody than the game's default soundtrack. Occasionally, players will hear a different voice cut into the music and say words in the NATO phonetic alphabet. Those who write down these letters will discover two hidden messages: "The goat is a lie" and "All your rafts are belong to us." Both are references to old internet memes and have no deeper meaning.

Players can also turn off the radio with the interaction button (default key E). This effectively turns off all the game's music since the radio overrides the regular soundtrack as long as it's placed on the raft. To listen to the soundtrack again, players will need to pick up the radio and put it in storage.

Cassette Tapes

Raft Cassettes

The other thing players can do with the radio is play the cassette tapes found in various places throughout the game. To insert a cassette, players must put it in an active slot and use it on the radio. To remove it, players must look directly at the cassette deck on the radio and hit the interaction button.

There are six cassette tapes in the game:

  • The Classical, Pop, Rock, and EDM Cassettes are all randomly found in safes discovered with the metal detector.
  • The Elevator Cassette is hidden in the secret room on Tangaroa. Players should go to the elevator in the plantation area and hit the button on the upper-left corner of the doorframe. This cassette plays the elevator music heard on Tangaroa.
  • The Trading Post Cassette is on the tier 3 list at trading posts and can be purchased for 6 trash cubes and 8 trade coins. This tape plays the jingle players can hear at trading posts.
