The game Raft starts out with the player on a small raft four squares big holding nothing but a hook and floating in a stream of plastic, planks, and other debris. The first thing to do is use the hook to gather the debris and start crafting, and two of the first materials players will need are palm leaves and rope.

Fortunately, there are a number of places players can get these essential materials, and both are tied together much closer than first-time Raft players might think. At the same time, while there are many broad-leaf plants on islands, not all of them are sources of palm leaves.

Where to Get Palm Leaves

Raft Tree Axe

The ocean stream is full of palm leaves that players can gather. If the leaves are close enough, players can grab them directly, and if they're farther away the hook can grab them and drag them over. The current also carries large containers like barrels and crates, and these often contain several palm leaves.

The other consistent way to get palm leaves is to cut down trees on tropical islands. Each tree can take five blows from an axe, and for every chop they have a chance to drop wood, palm leaves, fruit, or seeds. However, an important note is that not every tree will drop leaves. Players will eventually reach the evergreen biome that introduces birch and pine trees, and both trees drop planks and seeds but nothing else.

Something else players should keep in mind is that all the bushes and flowering plants they can find on islands aren't sources of palm leaves. They may look like they have the same kind of broad leaf as the material, but they're only there for decoration. Some survival-builder games let players harvest every bit of greenery, but Raft isn't one of them.

One other thing players can do is grow their own trees to harvest. The large crop plots accept tree seeds, and once they fully grow players can chop them down just like any tree found on an island.

Where to Get Rope

Raft Rope Fence

Players can get rope from the same floating containers that drop palm leaves. Rope doesn't drop nearly as often as planks or palm leaves, but there's another way players can get large amounts of the material.

In the crafting menu, players will see a section called "Resources." The recipes in this group are useful for crafting other items, and at the top of the list is rope. All players need for one length of rope are two palm leaves. In fact, there's a way for players to skip going to the Resources menu: when looking at an item that needs rope or some other craftable resource, players can click on the resource's icon to quickly craft it out of whatever's in their inventory.

Raft is available now on PC.
