Now that A Quiet Place 2 is officially a box office hit, the next movie in the franchise is officially coming. This film, unofficially titled A Quiet Place 3, will be the first in the franchise not directed by John Krasinski and it even has an official launch date from Paramount.
AQuiet Place 2 launched to commercial and critical acclaim earlier this month. The new film takes place within hours of the end of the first and shows the continued struggle of mankind to deal with the invasion of alien creatures that have incredibly acute hearing. A Quiet Place Part II shows more of the beginning of that invasion and also introduces several new characters. While this movie is a direct sequel to the first, the third in the series is not expected to be a continuation of the first two.
While there isn't much known about A Quiet Place 3 yet, Deadline did report some details about the work in progress. That included the fact that the film was recently put on the release calendar for March 31, 2023. While Krasinski won't direct A Quiet Place 3, he's not entirely removed from this upcoming project. It's been reported that the story for the upcoming film was dreamt up by Krasinski but will be written and directed by Jeff Nichols. It's also not a "threequel" so it doesn't appear that it will be tied to the Abbott family.
So it appears that the studio believes that A Quiet Place 2 wrapped up the story of Emily Blunt and her family since this third installment is meant to "expand the world" that viewers were introduced to in the first two films. The report speculates that A Quiet Place 3 will follow the lives of other survivors of the invasion that basically brought the human race to the brink of extinction.
Nichols is going to be returning to the science-fiction genre with A Quiet Place 3 for the first time since he wrote and directed Midnight Special. The story in that movie involved a father and son who were on the run from the government. In other words, his last sci-fi film wasn't focused on an alien species taking over the planet by killing everyone they heard.
Despite not really having a background in alien invasion films, the man who built the A Quiet Place franchise into a series that has made more than $432 million in theaters around the world trusts Nichols to carry on the mantle. So, fans might have reason to be optimistic about the new director taking the helm.
A Quiet Place Part II is now playing in theaters.
