It would have taken the power of a Psychonaut with precognition to know that Double Fine Productions  would show the first trailer for Psychonauts 2 at The Game Awards 2018. Fans were definitely surprised, but also absolutely thrilled, to see the first real look at the game and a new release window.

The original Psychonauts released back in 2005 and the sequel wasn't announced until a decade later. No information on the game, such as plot or setting, has been released, and the only clue as to what the game would look was through Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin, the VR adventure title that released last year. All of that has changed, however, as the first Psychonauts 2 trailer lays out these important details nicely, and is packed with plenty of the humor and weirdness the series is known for.

The story picks up shortly after the events of the first game and Rhombus of Ruin. Raz, the talented acrobat with psychic powers, has achieved his lifelong dream of joining the Psychonauts. According to the trailer, Raz will be spending a lot of time in and around the Motherlobe, the headquarters of the Psychonauts. Unfortunately, he'll have to get right to work sniffing out a mole and dealing with powerful psychic villains. To do so, Raz needs to explore the history of the organization and his own family's past for answers.

The trailer is packed with new and returning characters, new environments, and new enemies, so the sequel appears to be expanding the Psychonauts world tremendously. What's more, the game also looks fantastic. Those who crowdfunded Psychonauts 2 will be pleased to see their investment was worth it.

Unfortunately, it has a pretty wide release window of 2019. No one should expect Double Fine to slim that down anytime soon. However, the studio should announce more detail on the game in the coming months, and audiences will likely see another trailer or two in that time as well.

Psychonauts 2 is scheduled to launch on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in 2019.
