It's been quite some time since Psychonauts 2 fans got any meaty updates about the upcoming game, but during today's Xbox games showcase, a psychedelic new trailer was revealed featuring music by none other than Jack Black. The trailer offers a substantial look at one of the game's new levels, which fits perfectly with the weird nature of the first Psychonauts.

The new trailer features Razputin, or "Raz," hopping into a brain in a jar. Jack Black plays a singing mote of light as Raz works his way through a mind-bending spectrum of colors and patterns. The song plays into the trippy nature of the trailer with lyrics like "I can smell the universe, and I can taste the sky."

At various points in the trailer, fans can see massive eyeballs dominating the sky, some looking at Raz, and shifting patterns on the ground. If anything, it's a sign that Psychonauts 2 will be just as strange as the first game, which featured similar types of strange levels and weird dialogue. The first Psychonauts released all the way back in 2005, so fans of the series have waited quite some time for the new game.

Psychonauts 2 was a crowdfunded project initially, though Microsoft purchased Double Fine, the studio behind the game, giving the studio some extra resources. The original game is a cult classic, garnering love from a dedicated base of fans. With any luck, Microsoft's support of the project will help it find a larger audience, and being added to Xbox Game Pass on day one will certainly help get the game in more people's hands.

Jack Black's involvement with the game is a pleasant surprise, and one that seems to be garnering a positive reaction online, though it now makes sense why Jack Black appeared at a Psychonauts 2 E3 2019 panel. Jack Black is most famous for his rules in movies like School of Rock, but has recently started his own YouTube channel, Jablinski Games, where he uploads a variety of content.

Psychonauts 2 doesn't have a release date yet, though the game is, supposedly, slated to launch this year. Time will tell if that's the case, and with the current state of the global pandemic, a delay isn't out of the question. Either way, fans seemingly have a lot to look forward to whenever Psychonauts 2 is finally available.

Psychonauts 2 is currently in development.
