Sony has announced its next major update for the PlayStation 5 and its coming tomorrow. The update offers many new features and options for people to customize their PS5.

There have only been a handful of system updates for the PS5 since its launch last November. The most recent PS5 system update came this past July which admittedly, did not bring that many new features to the table. In the mandatory update, the PS5 got a performance boost and not much else, sadly. However, from the way things are looking, the upcoming update looks to make up for the previous one's shortcomings.

Sony updated the PlayStation Blog this morning with news that a new PS5 update will be launching globally tomorrow. Hideaki Nishino, the Senior Vice President of Platform Experience at PlayStation, delivers the write up of the update, listing the multitude of additions it is packing. Starting with PS5 UX enhancements, players will be able to customize what Control Center "more freely," as well as view and write message directly from the Game Base. For users who have both PS4 and PS5 versions of some games, this update will now show them separately in the "Installed" tab, instead of stacking them both within the single game icon.

Along with the 6 new games coming to PlayStation Now this month, subscribers will be able to choose between 720p or 1080p for individual games and use a connection test tool to see just how well they are streaming. On the hardware side, the new update brings the technology of the 3D audio utiilzied by many gaming headsets straight to the TV by using the DualSense controller. Additionally, M.2 SSD storage expansion will officially be available within this update, finally giving PS5 players the optimal route to expand the console's default 1TB storage capacity. Lastly, for players who have been enjoying PS Remote Play, the new update allows for streaming across cellular networks, no longer requiring a WiFi connection.

This is a fairly strong update from Sony, considering how underwhelming previous ones have been. It balances updating current features and options of the console while also introducing new ones, not introducing too much or too little. That said, there is still many more PS5 features that Sony should implement, from boosting the performance (and offerings) of its backwards compatibiltity or more precise playtime tracking. Based on the schedule of the PlayStation 5's updates, the next one may not be for another month or two, so until then, this update should hold players over.
