A PlayStation vice president confirms that there will be several PS5 special editions when the console launches later this year. Sony has officially confirmed two version of the console, with one of these being the PS5 Digital Edition, but it seems that fans will have much more than that to choose from.

In a series of now-deleted comments on LinkedIn, PlayStation vice president of UX design, Matt MacLaurin, said that while the white version of the PS5 is the "flagship" mode, fans can "count on even more beautiful (and hopefully radical) special editions." MacLaurin also confirmed that there the "customization with special editions will be beyond anything seen before."

Since MacLaurin's comments were discovered by PlayStation fans, the community has been speculating heavily about what these PS5 special editions could look like. One suggestion is that the PS5's white panels could be replaceable, like the Xbox 360's faceplates. Sony did release a line of PS4 faceplates, giving gamers another way of customizing their consoles more cheaply than buying a limited edition PS4 bundle, but this never really took off.

There also seems to be a huge amount of support for PS5 special editions based on some of the exclusive games confirmed for the console at the PS5 reveal event. While an artist created an amazing Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales PS5 design after the console was revealed last week, MacLaurin himself would like to see a Horizon: Forbidden West edition PS5. "I’m sure there will be a special edition for everyone, I’m hoping for a Horizon Forbidden West special edition," he wrote.

A large number of PS5 exclusives were shown at the console reveal event and any one of these would be suitable for the special edition treatment. PS5 launch title Godfall is all about equipping different armor sets and so would be a strong, highly-related choice while the excitement surrounding Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart would also make it a good special edition console pick.

Sony has not announced anything about any potential PS5 special editions and the speed at which MacLaurin deleted his LinkedIn comments once fans began to share them suggests that he had let the whole cattery out of the bag. However, fans will surely be delighted at the possibility of customizing their consoles as the PS5 design was widely mocked and many also criticized Sony for not revealing a black version of the console and its DualSense controller.
