With both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X set to launch this holiday season, it's surprising that neither Sony nor Microsoft have revealed specific release dates or price points for their next-generation consoles. However, there have been plenty of "leaks" about when the PS5 and Xbox Series X will launch, and while some are more believable than others, the latest report stems from a reliable source.
VGC, known for its accurate inside scoops, has cited "development and retail sources" that say the PS5 will launch in the middle of November. This combined with sources claiming that PlayStation has "booked significant marketing" starting Friday, November 13 seems to suggest that Friday, November 13 (or the week of November 13) is the most likely PS5 release date. VGC's sources at Xbox also believe that the PS5 will launch either November 13 or "within the week" of November 13.
The November 13 release date for the PS5 makes a lot of sense for another reason as well. It was recently announced that the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War release date is indeed Friday, November 13, and that the game is looking to be available for the PS5 and Xbox Series X on day one. Releasing the PS5 on the same day as the new Call of Duty seems like a smart move, especially since Black Ops Cold War is continuing the Call of Duty franchise's PlayStation timed-exclusivity deals in regards to certain content (the only thing confirmed so far is early access to the multiplayer open beta).
Meanwhile, VGC's sources believe that the Xbox Series X will launch before the PlayStation 5, possibly the first week of November. Microsoft has already confirmed that the Xbox Series X will launch in November, but has yet to provide an exact date. The Xbox Series X launching earlier in the month would match up with some previous rumors about the console's release date. It's likely that both consoles will look to be launching in time for holiday shoppers.
However, it remains to be seen just how available the new consoles will be. Sony has been upfront that there will be PS5 shortages, setting up a program to let longtime PlayStation fans get first dibs on PS5 pre-orders. Microsoft hasn't been quite as doom and gloom when it comes to Xbox Series X availability, but it will likely be difficult to find for the first few months as well for anyone that doesn't manage to get a console pre-ordered.
Hopefully Sony and Microsoft share more information on the PS5 and Xbox Series X release dates soon so the speculation and leaks can end.
