Highlights

  • Starting on November 13, PlayStation users will lose Twitter integration, preventing them from posting new content and accessing previously uploaded clips and screenshots.
  • PS5 users can still use the PS app to upload and share content, while PS4 users can use the SHAREfactory app or transfer content to a USB drive.
  • The removal of Twitter integration was met with apathy on social media, with some users pointing out the PlayStation App workaround.

Starting on November 13, PlayStation users will lose access to the consoles' Twitter integration, which will prevent them from posting new content directly from the console, and from accessing clips, screenshots, and trophy notifications that have already been uploaded to the service. However, Sony clarified that PS5 users will be able to use the PS app to upload and share content, and the PS4 can do the same via the SHAREfactory app.

This move from PlayStation consoles comes nearly seven months after Xbox removed Twitter integration. This change was due to Twitter's API changes made by Elon Musk, and these changes would cost major companies such as Sony and Microsoft nearly $42,000 per month to access Twitter API functionality. This API was what allowed console users to freely share their game clips and screenshots. As a result, the response to Twitter's API access change has been overwhelmingly negative.

As of November 13, PS4 and PS5 users will be unable to upload their videos and screenshots directly from their consoles to Twitter. But, Sony gave users some workarounds for uploading their clips to the service. According to PlayStation, PS5 users will be able to upload their clips, screenshots, and trophies to the cloud, which can then be accessed on the PlayStation mobile app. Users can use their smartphones to download content from the PS app to their devices, and then upload to Twitter. Clips and screenshots will be kept in the cloud for a maximum of 14 days, and a PlayStation Plus subscription is not required to use it.

Users can either upload their media manually through the PS5's Media Gallery or turn on auto-upload if the console is in sleep mode and connected to the Internet. Content can only be uploaded to the cloud if the resolution is set to 1080p, and if a video is three minutes or less. PS4 users can instead use the SHAREfactory app, or transfer their content to a connected USB drive for future use on another device. With Black Friday right around the corner, and rumored PS5 bundles coming as a result, the removal of Twitter integration was met with apathy on social media. Some users pointed out the PlayStation App workaround as a reason for the response.

With the removal of PS4 and PS5 Twitter integration, the Nintendo Switch is the only current console to still have the feature. Only time will tell if that will change in the future or not.
